Here what the lines looked like at practice yesterday. McQuaid should be back soon and slot into the 2nd pair (?). But this is what they start with. Thoughts?

Why are you breaking up Bergeron and Marchand? Are you a Bruins fan?

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and call it a mishap, but yeah breaking those two up is criminal, especially after their world cup performance.

Jacobs came out and said that he expects "a deep playoff run" this year. Anyone else nervous that Bs make more Stempniak-Liles deals that siphon off assets without making a marked improvement to satisfy ownerships desire for playoff revenue? I've come around on the idea of an on the fly rebuild if that's what they're doing, but I don't want to deal for bottom roster guys just to get the 7 seed and get bounced in the 1st or 2nd round. I'd rather A) play it out with the current roster and hope a youngster or two makes a leap, B) deal off higher end prospects and picks for an impact player or two and become a veteran contender, or C) salvage anything that you can for vets and go with a full on tear down (although how often does that work in hockey?). What I don't want is what's happening in DET where they're stuck in the middle with overpriced vets clogging the roster and cap and losing in the first round every year.

Although I am optimistic about this team, Jacobs needs to define his definition of "deep". To me, that means Conference Finals, which I think is a bit of a stretch for this team. Our offense is very good, but obviously the defense remains an issue.

I would go with option A. I like our prospects and with a little more development our defensive corps could be defined in the next two years or so (including a big FA signing). In regards to Detroit, it almost seems like they are just trying for the record (most playoff appearances in a row). I don't think they make it this year though.

I would feel better about option A if Zboril or McAvoy were closer to being ready to step in and impact the team, but I think that it might be their best option. With Marchand's new deal they'll have some decent cap room to add a quality player with some term left (hopefully no rentals) during the season or make a move next summer. However it shakes out it going to be nice to watch some hockey again!

No McQuaid on the 2nd pair. He's not a 2nd pair defenseman.

It's why I put the "?" next to it as I don't think that he is either. But, at the same time, are O'Gara or either of the Millers? That's what I'm curious to see this month is how that right side shakes out. Between injuries to the older guys and so many young guys with no NHL minutes I have no idea what going to happen. It's by far the weakest spot on the roster and they need to address it if they want to win now. Or they could use it as a way to get young players NHL experience so that they could see what they have moving forward. Again, it's going to be interesting watch.

I'd rather have Kevan Miller, ROG, JML, Morrow, Colin Miller, and Ehrhoff (who they let go) along with many others over McQuaid in the top 4. He is an utter disaster there.

Didn't they offer Ehrhoff a contract, but he decide to take his toys and go home? Dunno the specifics and too lazy to look.

Offered him a contract but couldn't guarantee top 6 playing time, so he left. he was going to be a #7/8 here.
