The way I am processing this is, add the JJ buyout to Matheson salary.

Not sure which is worse, just keeping JJ and not trading for Matheson OR Matheson near 6 million a couple years and later down to near 5 million.

I think you look at that contract wrong. Matheson will play bottom pairing, sheltered. He will be encouraged to play his old game.
If he turns it around, they will flip him and move him out.
I think that's highly likely. He isn't dead weight like JJ was. He's more like Gudbranson was. There is talent there. He's still young. Defense is in need. I am a believe if you can move Guddy for nothing, you can turn this guy around too.

The fact is the buyout on JJ after Matheson was acquired.
1+1 = 2

Matheson is not with 4.875 million AAV 6 years, definitely not worth nearly 6 for few years then 5 later on

Matheson has played well in the best worthy of that cap hit. There is a lot there to unpack. New coach etc...
I think it's a bit early to say how he plays. It's not like the penguins didn't get guys from FL who could play before. They dumped off McCann as a waste and Bjugstad. Both played well for the penguins.
So slow the roll.

On top of it, Seattle next year. If he plays well. He'll be available in the expansion draft. They will shed him easily there.

Haven't heard that Penguins won't be honoring the NTC either, best to work as it is still there until otherwise stated.

Do you think Matheson liked leaving a no tax spot? Most people when making ACGMs always point out the no tax spot when signing guys.

He has a M-NTC, you're only forced to protect NMCs so no need for his consent to expose to Seattle.

we don't even know if he has a N-NTC. he may have waived the whole thing in the trade. No one knows. We should not pretend to.
That maybe part of it.

I think he hated playing for Quin. Because he career was dead there.

The point is that whether he has a M-NTC or not is irrelevant. The only players a team is forced to protect in the expansion draft are those who have a NMC and Matheson doesn't have one.

yes I know this. And I stated that above implied when I said it's not a full NTC.
But it does effect if he could be traded elsewhere.
Like I said. We have no idea on the status of that. It could be non existent. None of us know.
