The buyout ratio is 1/3 instead of 2/3 since he's younger than 26.

I thought he had a weak season but a strong playoffs.

Earlier today I posted a Caps trade of Carl Hagelin and a 2nd for Wenberg with some retention. Hagelin outscored him at evens this year, but I think Wenberg bounces back. The only CBJ fan who saw my post said it was too much retention, but I think CBJ might just not want to deal within the division.

He's just turned 26, though. https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/w/wennbal01.html

Maybe the league lets Columbus slide as though he's 25. If not, I could see them trading him with retention, rather than carrying 2/3 his salary as cap hit for six years.

He's treated as 25 for the purposes of the buyout because he would have been 25 during what should have been the original buyout windows.

They made the edit for this year (p61 in the NHL/NHLPA MOU)
