Doesn't make lot of sense to me. That extra million hit is going to be there probably when Detroit wants to be competitive and a cap team.

I think there could be another deal attached to this. If they are looking to clear off more cap, maybe taking on more cap in trades.

Moving Abs to GR would have only saved 1.05mm, this deal saves ~2.45mm.

Think they should've waited at least a year to buy him out. That million may come in handy in a few years.

Another thought was with his ntc, it affects who we can protect with Seattle. Wouldn't be shocked if frans Nielsen is next

I think we have to have them off the books before the expansion draft, don't think the buy-out window is before the draft. We would have had to protect him, this protects against that. Frans night be next

Saves 3.2M cash and spreads the cash flow out over more years. I think a lot of fans aren’t accounting for the financial hit many of these owners are taking. Yzerman could also try to leverage more cap for futures.

You only have to protect NMCs.

Also the protection for expansion draft goes away. Look for similar with frans

The 2017 expansion draft was on the 21st; the buyout window opens on the 15th usually. I think they could've done it next season.

We could’ve afforded to just bury him. I hope this means we’ll spend up to the cap

I’m betting this is a case of having an internal budget and wanting to do another staal like trade. Think should expect them to add a short term questionable contract in very near future.

The principle will probably remain the same, even if all the dates get crunched together like this offseason.

Still, the buyout isn't the end of the world.

Yeah i'm thinking another big trade is in the works, Possible big UFA signing cough Krug cough Krug. And besides we need to remember that more then likely there's no AHL next season so we couldn't bury Abby in GR.

Mixed feelings on this. I won't complain about not having to watch this guy next year but 6 more years of him on the books? Woof.

I think it would be better to buy out Abby next year. Even if the AHL doesn't play this year I am sure that the NHL will come up with some type of reserve list where buried salaries will count against cap in the same manor as burying a player in the AHL does now. I'm also sure that they will still have a waivers process.

Why is the calculator on here not even close to what the story says that the cap hit is?

I'm thinking the AHL season is becoming less and less likely. Veleno's move to the SHL is foretelling. You can't play in the SHL and be reassigned back to the NHL. SHL contracts have no outs, and are for a SHL season. Which is why some guys are playing in the Allsvenskan, which doesn't have those same rules.
