True but than comes the issue of extending Ovechkin, Vrana, and Samsonov. Plus with Seattle coming in they risk losing a Dman for free. In general I see the capitals looking for a cheap 3rd pair RD so they can protect (Orlov, Carlson, Dillon)

Good idea. Lundqvist will be closer to 2 million. DeMelo might be had for $500,000 less. Boyd likely traded for a 5th or 6th. Spooner gets a real chance, maybe even McMicheal on a wing. Regardless Caps only carry 1 extra D and forward to get cap compliant. Extending OV, V and Sam will require moving Kempny, Hagelin and or Ryan.

They're not going to protect Dillon over Siegs.

I predict their protection list is a formality, as they offer Seattle a 2nd to formally commit to picking Oshie. But I agree, if Dillon minded going back to the West Coast, it would say NMC next to his name.

DeMelo is good. This could be a good signing, at 3-3.5M. My question: could they get better value if Shattenkirk offers another contender a discount to try to win two in a row, while staying on the East Coast? Or if no one bids on Rutta, would Rutta at 1M be almost as good? And if so, could they add another decent forward, too?

Reports have Lundqvist signing near the league minimum...
