That's a fair point. My only thought is they are trading for his rights, not his contract. But again, you're probably right. What we get in return isn't as important to me in this scenario. Optimistically, I was thinking Shayne Gostisbehere instead of signing Merill, but that'd be harder to fit in with the pending performance bonuses. The main reason for the trade is not having the cap to sign him. Also replenishing picks we lost from offer sheeting Cirelli.
