He really wanted to go the Rangers for several years so there would be a lot of sour grapes from him if he got moved 1 year into his massive contract.

The Leafs and most teams don't have the cap for Trouba without trading an equal amount of and back to the Rangers.
Teams with cap don't really want him either cause they can probably get as much value signing UFAs. Trouba isn't worth his 8m, which is the 6th highest paid Dman in the league.

Rangers are one of the bright and exciting young teams on the up and up and plowing hard through their rebuild. They have a ton cap room as well. If there is one area that needs improvement for the Rangers, I would say it's the D, especially now with Marc Staal gone, a lot of their D group (Fox, D'Angelo, etc.) are more geared as the mobile offensive guy, where Trouba provides much of what's lacking there. It is why I was so impressed with their Braden Schneider pick and it would not surprise me at all to see him in the NHL at some point next season, or the season that follows. As such, I see absolutely no reason why the Rangers would ever consider dealing Trouba, which to me means overpayment, like Sandin, Robertson their 2021 1st sort-of overpayment.

Honestly I'd take a first round pick in 2021 alone and I'd retain $1 million to get him out of NY. We have too many RHD (Fox, Lundkvist, Schneider) after last night, even with ADA likely headed elsewhere (VGK is the current rumor) and need that cap space to get a 2C.

I think the Rangers would be delighted to trade Trouba now while they still can before his full NMC goes into effect. And everyone who argues "but his girlfriend is studying in NYC!" clearly doesn't get how the NHL works lol. It's a business, and they operate as a business. And I'd take a first round pick alone and I'd even retain some salary just to get him out of NYC. We need spots for our RHD prospects (Lundkvist, Schneider) and cap space to go after a 2C.

Leafs probably wouldn’t trade 1 of those assets alone forget all three. Trouba is descent but he is far overpaid. The rangers would be unable to move him without retaining or a cap dump coming back. Sandin and Robertson are ranked higher than every prospect in ur system other than laf btw.

Trouba isn't a right side version of Muzzin. Besides,Either way,I don't think the Leafs should go for him anyway.Too expensive.
