than you realize it's a very smart move.
Why pay the guy on a high, a massive contract. When he's been bad every year prior.

I wouldn't take him to arbitration either. Let him walk. It's better than taking that bad contract.

He repped himself on these negotiations and was unwilling to back down from at least $4 million AAV over at least 5 seasons. Considering his career, and the rise he had last year, I can see why Ottawa was hesitant to give him term.

They offered him a raise but Duclair who represented himself said he wanted to test free agency

he wouldnt have gotten any form of substantial contract from the sens anyways. It was always going to be low-risk

He's eligible for arbitration. After a 23 goal season. He'd got more than he's honestly worth.
He doesn't play defense. That's why he was chased out of CBJ. Torts would chew him out on ice all the time for it.
That's why they didn't QO him.

That must have been a tough decision but don’t blame Ottawa. This is a case just like AA that I would not take any chance going to arbitration. Ruling would likely be high enough that he isn’t seen as an attractive trade chip so cut ties now doesn’t mean Ottawa can’t or won’t offer him a short term deal tho.

Expect Duclair to end up with the Avs, regardless of whether or not they get Taylor Hall.

Matt Murray for 2-3 years at 5-6 mill will take them there along with Gaborik and Nilsson on IR. His 1 year arbitration was gonna be 4.5 mill for his 23 goals. Ottawa didn’t want that and Duclair thought he was worth more than Ottawa offered him on a contract

Nah I would be shocked by that. He doesn’t fit the avs mold of guys under bednar. They really value high character and defensive responsible forwards. Duclair doesn’t fit that type

I would be utterly shocked if Murray's new deal even hits $5 million AAV.
