Maybe want to avoid overpaying them in arbitration?

Because most aren’t worth qualifying offer. Guaranteed every gm attempted to move them but need a dancing partner

Look at a guy like Evan Rodrigues. To qualify would mean that ultimately, the Leafs would be bound to pay him whatever the upgraded salary was over what he was paid last season, which I believe was $2 million, but he's not worth that at all.

I've been wondering the same. Guys like Stecher, Antanesiou, Kuhan, Ducliar and more are not getting QA's, don't really get it.

If oilers qualified AA at 3million that can backfire huge on the team. If he brought it to arbitration no telling what the ruling would be. Not risking an outsider looking at the 30 goal season he had a year before and averaged around 20 the two prior. Very possible rules a 20-25% pay raise so suddenly oilers would be on the hook for upwards of 4 million now for a guy who managed 1 goal and 1 assist with the team. Not risking without knowing how arbitration will take into account leagues revenue loss.

Not sure why Duclair wasn't qualified, worst case you overpay him by a million for 1 year, which we can afford to do. I get it for guys like Athanasiou and Rodrigues who are not worth their QO, but Duke is definitely worth his 1.65 QO, and even if he gets 5mil in arb, it's only for 1 year and we're below the floor, so that's a garbage move.

GMs aren't going to send a pick if they can just offer a contract to/sign this guy in less than 48 hours

1) Teams weren’t prepared for the cap to stay put and can’t afford to give raises to those depth guys anymore.

2) you’re also seeing way more buyouts for that exact same reason because no one is capable of taking big contracts even with some incentives

3) Top RFAs are demanding way too much money after coming off their ELC so teams have to make tough decisions on lower tier guys. No one is signing for what Pastrnak got anymore. Heck even now they’re considering trading Debrusk because he’s asking for too much money. Every top player want some of those Toronto type contracts and teams can’t afford that

Koekkoek not being re-signed infuriates me. Maybe our 2nd or 3rd best defenseman from this season and we let him go for nothing. Better be trying to bring him back for cheap

He didn’t accept the Sens offer for a longterm contract, he wanted 5 years at 4+ mill, Sens didn’t give it to him.

His 1 year arbitration was around 4.5 mill, Sens didn’t wanna give it to him.

There was no other option

With Beaudin, Carlson, Mitchell pushing for spots and Dehaan and Seabrook still in the fold, it seemed inevitable from my POV

Exactly that, especially if teams have internal budgets and caps bc of covid, arbitration doesn’t care about that

Still don't like it. With the way he played this year, you make room him, especially considering how cheap he'll probably be in comparison to De Haan and Seabrook. Even if they weren't going to keep him for next year, at least get something back for him, it sucks. And if there's no market, just keep him
