What still needs to be done

Created by: EccE
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 8, 2020
Published: Oct. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The plan heading into the season is to see how good this team is and giving up fast if it does not succeed. Wild has four rentals (Johansson, Bonino, Bjugstad and Foligno) in case we are sellers at the deadline and a lot of young guys who need the playing time.

With Judd Brackett already doing a fantastic job drafting a bright future for us, we need to give him as many darts to throw as possible. This way, we can contend even before Parise's and Suter's contracts are (finally) ending.

For the net offseason, we have Kaprizov, Fiala, Eriksson Ek etc. to sign, but we have 29 million in cap space so we'll manage.

Trades
1.
MIN
  1. Fleury, Marc-André ($2,000,000 retained)
  2. 2021 1st round pick (VGK)
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Fleury's value is negative (teams didn't take him for free) and Vegas is already over the cap, so this is the best they can get. This is ugly for them, but the alternative is having Fleury's whole 7M cap hit on the books.
VGK
  1. Stalock, Alex
Additional Details:
Wild kill two birds with one stone and acquire a goalie while getting future assets in picks. While Fleury is not the ideal fix for Wild's goalie problems, he certainly is better than Dubnyk was.
2.
MIN
  1. Monahan, Sean
  2. 2022 4th round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Monahan is a nice top6-C who can help the Wild immediately. He is rumored to be traded and is the only piece that would really interest Wild. Of course, he has a bit more value than Dumba, so a hockey trade would not be possible. That's why I added some picks into the mix.
CGY
  1. Dumba, Matt
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
A right-handed quality D should fetch a hefty return even if he had a down year. Dumba is still relatively young (26) and has a high potential but also a high floor. He would easily fit in Calgary's top4 and should help their D-corps a lot.
3.
MIN
  1. Okposo, Kyle
Additional Details:
A bad contract. Okposo is the worse player here, but what the Wild get is shorter term (deal ends in -23) and not having to protect Zuccarello in the expansion draft. Okposo has a modified NTC, meaning he does not have to be protected.
BUF
  1. Zuccarello, Mats
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
A bad contract. Zuccarello is clearly the better player here but Buffalo does not want to get him because of the term left (deal lasts a year longer than Okposo's) on his deal. That's why Wild adds a small sweetener. Zuccarello needs to waive NMC for this trade to go through, though.
4.
MIN
  1. 2022 7th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Rask has two years left on his deal, so if someone wants to bury him in the minors, they can get a nice return (a good depth-piece in Hartman + medium-tier, NHL-ready D-prospect in Menell) from Minnesota.
OTT
  1. Hartman, Ryan
  2. Menell, Brennan [RFA Rights]
  3. Rask, Victor
Additional Details:
Any team, really. Ottawa just happens to have a lot of cap space.

Okposo is still a really good defensive 3rd liner. I think it’s a given that they will keep him.

Flames are not trading their 1C for a an offensive dman, those can be acquired in free agency

Refreshingly sober & articulate post that should serve as a standard of how to do an Agm properly

My one minor qualm is I feel Ottawa have just shifted into forward gear with a big draft haul and the Murray signing and are no longer a rebuilding burial ground for trash contracts

Otherwise great stuff

Flames are in win-now-mode so they need help now. This year, the best offensive D-man in free agency is Torey Krug, who is asking 8 million minimum on a max-term deal. There also is the injury-prone Vatanen and unreliable Barrie, who seek for at least similar AAV to more-reliable Dumba. Sure, you could get one from free agency but their price is going to be a lot more than what they are actually worth. But I'll believe it, if a Flames fan declines, they know their team better than I do.

I picked Ottawa for their amount of cap space. Any team will do if they want to take on Rask's contract. Thanks for the praises!

Look I would love to get Dumba but there is no way Calgary would move Monahan for him, it completely contradicts the "win now" notion you mentioned above

You usually dont "win-now" by trading your 1C, thats more like a rebuild now mode.

Why so decisive here gosh

They're losing TJ/Gus, Gio is now just good at 37, Kylington isn't quite ready yet, their other young NHL D are just solid as well, Valimaki the only notable prospect, its a bad time to overpay a 30 year old FA and they're arguably as deep on D as they are at C with Elias/Backs an underrated duo...

Seems reasonable to suggest that trade but no question the D market >>> the C market currently

I was referring to the situation is their defense. You also don't win with TJ Brodie (UFA) and Rasmus Andersson as your top RD: s. Brad Treliving has been the GM for years now, and there has been no success, so I wouldn't be surprised if he made some bold moves this offseason.

I like these deals, however I don’t see Zucc waiving to go to Buffalo. Plus after two more years Zucc loses his NMC so it might be smarter to keep him.

If we kept him, we would have to protect him in the expansion draft, meaning we would lose a good player to Seattle. Maybe Zucc would waive because of Staal or in hopes of playing time? I hope so.

You are severely underrating Brodie and Andersson. Andersson is 23 and has almost identical numbers to Muzzin as well as playstyle. LA won the cup with him as their #2.

I can promise you no GM is trading away their #1C for a D man straight up especially a 1C who's put up 30g since hes started in the NHL.
I'd take Dumba but not for that price, its not even close 1 for 1.

Rasmus Andersson is a top 2 dman already so I dont really understand how thats an indicator that our d core is bad, yeah clearly there are moves to be made for the Flames but you don't trade your 1C for a dman. Its basic asset management that you don't open up a hole to address a hole in your roster, you always trade from a surplus.
