See I thought that too, but with how this FA market is turning out it got me thinking. Might make sense to take a 1 year paycut and lose 4-5M and be able to play well again and then go after a larger and longer contract next summer. If he has a repeat year which I'm sure he feels he can do.. It might get him 7-8m over 7 years instead of a 5M over 5 years. It's really hard to say

The answer is in the middle here. The Rangers dont want Tony long term, they are holding a spot on the right side for Nils when he comes over next season. Also this season, unlike last, Tony has arbitration rights, so Tony will clearly go to arbitration before he signs for less than $5m, the Rangers will select a year 1 award since they can pick a 1 or 2 year award term, and then the arbitrator will land between 3-4m.
