TOR clears cap space. Penguins get a 3C rather than going to FA.
They could just as easily go for Wennburg or Haula.

0 chance a team pays TOR to take Johnsson too.

If TOR or TB or any number of teams could have moved cap, it would have happened by now.

You want to be given a first round pick to take on a player you intend to play in your top 9? And you want them to retain salary as well.

It cost a 2nd to dump Marc Staal who made 2 million more and is not any good. This is so far off base.

Although it does seem to be a Pittsburgh thing to want overpaid players, so I guess anything is possible.

Um what exactly are the leafs getting in return here? Kerfoot can return at least a 3rd from another team

Why would TOR pay to get rid of Kerfoot? They could easily trade him away for a good return.

I disagree. I actually think it had more to do with teams not wanting to trade 2020 draft picks and being unsure about what was going to happen with RFA's and QO's. I think now that both of those things have settled down, there might be some moves today.

I mean, if you're a team like LA, Detroit, Ottawa and aren't going to compete this season, you'd be foolish not to acquire players, whether they are attached with draft picks or not. Fill your cap space, and maybe retain on a player and flip them later. But to just sit there with unused cap space when other teams desperately need the relief would be a missed opportunity.

That Kadri trade is looking so good right now. Well, good for those of us who despise the Leafs.

Even Dubas himself has said it.
""Always," he says with a chuckle. "I'm not sure we would be able do that without making a poor trade ... we don't really have any contracts we look at & say, 'We need to get rid of this player ...'""

he can't move players. You aren't getting a 2nd for Johnsson. You are giving up for anyone to take anything.
You want to open up cap to get a defense man as FA starts.
Here you go.

Kerfoot and AJ aren't negative assets. They're both decent players on reasonable contracts.

I think you are heavily misinterpreting his quote. A "bad trade" for Dubas doesn't mean he is paying another team to dump a player (like Marleau last year). To him, it often means getting below market value for someone. That does not at all mean he is unable to move players. It probably means he is unwilling to move players for the return he is currently being offered, big difference. And no one is going to attach a first round pick to get rid of a useful NHL player on a reasonable deal, so let's get grounded back in reality. He likes Johnsson and Kerfoot as players, or they wouldn't be Leafs in the first place.

Nobody on here knows what anything is worth. If you had posted an ACGM with Matt Murray getting moved for a 2nd, people would have ****ed. Or Lias Anderson. Or how about when the Penguins were polite enough to give the Leafs a first (and a prospect) for Kapanen? Every single person on here would have thought those trades were garbage, so don't go pretending you have some sort of insight or knowledge others don't.
