How Could TB Match

Created by: Jaycee
Team: 2020-21 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 8, 2020
Published: Oct. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Even with dumping both Johnson and Killorn they are in trouble when it comes to matching a big Sergachev offer sheet. If they match it leaves them with 6.8m cap space to fill 8 roster spots including signing Cirelli and Cernak.

He’s still developing though I don’t think he’ll be ready to take on top line minutes. He can in the future but are teams willing to play him 2nd or 3rd pairing for another year at that cost? It’s like Drouin where he played really well on the third line on wing then MTL tried to make him a 1st line center

I see no reason for teams to take a contract from TB.
They are better off OS their players than taking 5 million cap hits for inferior players.
I think TB is is real trouble. They have to move out like 2-3 contracts. It's gonna cost a small fortune because no one should take any of those 5 mil per for multiple year deals for anything less than an arm and a leg.

I agree no teams should help Tampa taking on Johnson or Killorn. But even if they end up moving those two they’re going to need to move a third guy bc they are still in trouble.

In my view, their problem is that these moves to create cap-space room will generate little returns. Selling Killorn, Johnson, etc will get them middling picks, whereas selling Sergachev or Cirelli could get huge returns.

That is why I think they will ultimately sell Segachev, Cirelli, or both.

Just imagine what an opening bidding war for those two would get them.

It will cost you to move Killorn, Johnson etc....
that's what the market looks like today.

Agreed I think they could get a big haul for Sergachev or Cirelli. I would keep Cernak if I was TB bc he will cost less and is very good player imo. But from the sounds of things they are trying their best to dump a couple of guys with NTC

Johnson, yes, Killorn, maybe...but I agree with your point. Cap space has never been more expensive. And we haven't even started flat-cap era.

Doesn't sound like they are having much success

Serg has already made it pretty clear he's not interested in leaving, but I guess dreams are good to have. It's also getting hilarious how all we hear is that teams don't want to spend much this offseason so Tampa can't move guys but of course all these teams are going to throw 7 million+ offer sheets around. It's always nice to get a daily dose of comedy on these sites. Also, the narrative that teams are going conspire to screw over Tampa is very old. That's not how things work at all, at least not with teams that are trying to improve. Tampa will likely lose value on the returns for Johnson and Killorn, but clearing their hits to bridge Serg, Cirelli and Cernak is the end result that matters, not necessarily better picks or prospects.
