Next Year Game Plan

Description
So this current season is very young, and we still need to get at least 30 games into it to start coming to conclusions. However in my mind there's a couple issues that could arise.

Firstly is the well documented right handed defenseman issue. I think the Leafs have options; both Zaitsev and Carrick look really sturdy HOWEVER I can't see them being more than no. 3/4 guys. I also am not sure that having Marincin on our top pairing gives Rielly a solid partner. I think we could probably use a top line right handed defenseman to really boost our core. Options include:

Trading:
-Trouba
-Parayko
-Hamilton
-Faulk? (long shot)
-Barrie
-Savard
-Dumba?
-Hamonic

Signing:
-Burns
-Shattenkirk

I can't imagine how many teams would be willing to part with most of these players, and in Free Agency I don't want the Leafs having to be the highest bidder. So although Burns would be an ideal candidate, if it comes at 8m for 7 years that's not just attainable.

As well another issue that could arise is the expansion draft. And although we're probably in a pretty good spot; we still need to decide who we should leave for the pickings. Now originally I thought that leaving Bozak to be taken would be ideal but I'm starting to think otherwise. Currently our trio of Kadri-Bozak-Matthews or Matthews-Kadri-Bozak make us a very strong-perhaps even one of the strongest down the middle. Bozak seems to have the chemistry with JVR and Marner, while Kadri can play hard minutes and bring some intangibles (physicality, pestering). So I was thinking maybe the Leafs should look to protect Bozak. Now after going through our protection list (it's difficult now that General Fanager closed and they don't have that tool) I think a player Las Vegas would be interested in that Toronto would be willing to let go of is Kerby Rychel. I think Las Vegas would be interested because of the way the draft is set up, it makes it difficult to acquire young forwards. Since teams are allowed to protect 7 forwards, and players with only 2 years of experience or less are exempt it means most teams won't be leaving these young forwards unprotected. Rychel not only is young enough to be a good prospect (with a history of being a former first round pick) but he can also jump into their NHL lineup if need be.

Our Protection List:

Forwards:
-JVR
-Kadri
-Bozak
-Hyman

Defense:
-Rielly
-Parayko
-Gardiner
-Carrick

In my scenario I relied upon 3 assumptions:
1. That Shattenirk signed an extension with STL
2. Parayko continued to excel
3. Zaitsev proved to be very capable, but not top 2 worthy

So in this scenario I had Toronto trading away a top 4 defenseman with upside, who doesn't need to be protected in the expansion draft (in Zaitsev) and as well as a prospect who is REALLY coming into his own. Even a week in Kapanen looks to be this years Nylander of the group, he's got great speed, vision and skill. He also doesn't have to be protected.

Another scenario that I thought of that would be great would be signing Burns. Burns is one of the Leagues best, even Karlsson esque in his play last year, racking up points and goals and really driving play. That scenario would rely on him going to FA (he wants to be a Shark so unlikely) and we would need to sign him to a five year contract. Five years would have him expiring at the same time as Rielly, hence clearing space for his next contract. I think with the Leafs cap stand point we might even be able to do 8m for the 5 years.

Going to need to add Willy or Mitch to the Parayko deal. At that point stay away...

Ya I remember your trade from awhile back. I know you have to give value to get value but I think as of right now our big three (Matthews, Marner, Nylander) are untouchable. Although I feel this is quite a good package as it stands if we're trying to acquire a defenseman of that calibre

HAha, Blues say no. Shattenkirk is more likely for the leafs and Parakyko is a better player at this point that can be controlled through RFA.

IMO Leafs would be better off signing Shattenkirk in the off season and keep their assets. Likely costs them an extra $1mil to sign him as a UFA vs Parakyko as an RFA and is a more likely outcome

I love the Parayko pickup... i think that trade is very fair for both sides... STL might want a more 'ready' prospect/player but i wonder if they would want a LHD more... with Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk already on the right side and only Bouwmeester on the left maybe Gardiner would be a better fit...I think we could give them a lesser prospect with him too

          Maybe Gardiner+Leipsic for Parayko

          This would leave us with:

          Rielly-Parayko
          Hunwick-Zaitsev
          Marincin-Carrick

Also since most of our D prospects are LHD, theres room for they to move up on the left side

Teams aren't allowed to trade picks to tell LV not to select players. Not saying they can't come to an agreement. But it will have to be something less obvious. The NHL wants LV to succeed now, they aren't going to let back door deals happen. (Free draft picks and cash exchanges, etc)

Oh Really? idk why but I thought that would be acceptable; they're allowed to make trades before the expansion draft i know that

Anyways general consensus is that Parayko won't be leaving STL and that's fine, but do you guys see a player that I might have or might not have listed above as a possible option?

Hyman does not have to protected. I don't see Vegas taking many guys with only 1 year on their contracts...cause next year they would have to "start" all over. Martin, Bibeau, Leivo are better candidates to be drafted.
Bozak and Komarov I don't think so much ( I wouldn't protect them). Why not just resign Zaitsev long term, he looks like a top four Dman and keep Kapanen. Who knows with Zaitsev, he only has two years till he's a UFA so if he is good the Leafs might have to and want to sign him to long term extension this summer.
Rychel? He probably about the 6 best winger with the Marlies. He's probably a UFA next summer.

Actually sounds like the NHL is letting them start up as a team early so they can wheel and deal just like that. NHL said they want transparency on those deals not that they won't let them happen.
