I get why they did it. It won't solve their problems. Putting players like that on 4th lines just doesn't work.
It's why the Tom Wilsons of the world get paid 5 mil per. You got to be good enough to play real ice time.

Tampa won the cup and their top 6 (Stamkos-Point-Kucherov, Palat-Johnson-Killorn) had no power forwards or grinders. But their bottom 6 had Goodrow, Coleman, Maroon, Gourde & Verhaeghe, all big forecheckers known for winning puck battles. While ideal, it’s not mandatory to have a player of Wilson or Stone’s caliber to win the cup. But if your top forwards are all finesse, they need to be accommodated with gritty hardworking complimentary players.

Toronto has a lot more issues than just grit, but if their bottom 6 looks something like Engvall-Kerfoot-Mikheyev & Clifford-Spezza-Simmonds, it’s at least a start cuz they’ve got some heavy forecheckers on the wing.

And while I get your point.
TB was also willing to mix and match those guys.
And players like Goodrow, Coleman and Verhaeghe area ll younger guys with legs who can still fly up and down the ice. The only older player they added was Maroon, who is still effective as a 4th liner.
You got to still have legs to be on the ice and effective.
