Tanev was great in vancouver. But we also know his limitations. This is an elite shot blocker and defensively minded guy. However, if the team doesn't play him to his strengths, he is useless.
Even still, he is not a 4.5x4M player. There's a reason VAN kept their term short. His health concerns and history do not warrant a term deal.
CGY is overpaying all Vancouvers old players. It makes the internal blow much less of a blow. VAN laughs at calgary in cap hell.
Not sure how I feel about this one yet. Initial thought was why didn't we just resign Brodie instead, but apparently Tanev is pretty steady back there.
I hope that we play him with Giordano (not Hanifin). Hanifin struggled a bit when paired with a defensive guy in Hamonic, but really started coming into his own when he played with Andersson. I hope we keep that pair together and see what Giordano and Tanev can do together.
in years prior he would have got more term. Not in todays NHL.
4.5 is a solid number by him. It's the going rate for a defense man. He didn't have to take a flat cap discount.
Good for him.
I think this is a terrible deal because it's with the Clames and NOT the Penguins!!! I wanted him on the Penguins so bad. He is what we need but now the Flames got even better because I like what he brings even more than TJ Brodie. It's very good deal for the Flames as they have gotten better in keeping the puck out of their net with Tanev and with Markstrom in goal.
Brodie called Calgary asking if they were willing to re-sign him before he signed with the Leafs and they said no. Now they go out and sign Tanev for 500k less... am I missing something or did Calgary over rate Tanev or under rate Brodie?
