Was this a good signing?

His stock rose considerably during the playoffs. He was VAN's most consistent D, imo.

Who's the more valuable D, Tanev or Brodie?

I think the Leafs needed a guy more like Tanev than Brodie, and it would have saved them $500k, but we’ll have to see how this one works out for both teams.

Brodie called Calgary asking if they were willing to re-sign him before he signed with the Leafs and they said no. Now they go out and sign Tanev for 500k less... am I missing something or did Calgary over rate Tanev or under rate Brodie?

Yep, it sounds like that's exactly what happened. Tanev is an absolute warrior, but he's injury prone and has fallen off hard over the last couple of years.

I love Chris Tanev but the term is too much

Sure, he is much better than Brodie & Hamonic but 4 years... I hope that this gonna work out and hes goona be playing with Gio i assume, so thats good.

I love Tanev and what he brings, but 4 years for a 30 year old with the laundry list of injuries that he has is really dicey.

And that is the only reason I wouldn't want to sign him if I were a GM.

Tanev is much better defensively than Brodie, but almost zero offense.
His injury history is worrisome, but he is only 30, so a 4 yr deal isnt crazy. Surprised the Nucks couldnt match this. they need a player like him more than they do Barrie.

STILL cannot believe we in Pittsburgh did not sign this guy for this amount. He must have really wanted to stay out west.

Vancouver wins this deal by having Tanev go to the Flames for way too much money.

Tanev is still passable defensively, but he's not great in that regard anymore, and he's a black hole offensively. Throw in a rapid decline, a playing style that doesn't age well, and a concerning injury histroy and this deal has little chance of being a good value. Tanev as a Brodie replacement is likely set up for disappointment. He will be a popular guy in the locker room, he is a warrior, and his play will likely get defended far past his usefulness, but his on ice value has virtually no chance of being in line with this type of money.

Fans over rate Brodie. Foot speed is declining, only ever played well with Giordano. Good puck moving transition guy but if he gets locked in his own end he is absolutely lost. Both signings will be ugly in two years.

If Tanev stays healthy like last year, this deal will be fine. It's risky but not terrible.

For the record, this guy is making more money than Braden Holtby on his new contract in cap hit. And Braden Holtby is better.
