Great deal. I still think he's more of a 3rd pair guy than a top 4 guy, but Detroit needs those too.

No idea how Vancouver thought this was too much for them to pony up. Their defensive core is looking weakkkk

Its funny that Vancouver wouldn't give $1,700,000 to Stecher or $4,500,000 to Tanev.

But they'll give $4,300,000 to Holtby and $1,300,000 to Motte.

Kinda.

This one stings. It's a steal of a contract for the Wings.

The other two were drastic overpayments by the Flames. It softens the blow a lot. Given we got Holtby for a steal and CGY took markstrom for too long, I consider that a win.

Ive had this guy penciled in since we started doing trades of ericsson to Detroit. Great depth guy and looked to be headed to being a solid middle pair guy until he kinda plateaued this season. With seider and lindstrom probably in Europe all season he is gonna get get alot of mimutes.

They’re right side is very thin now tho, and they’re not getting Barrie. I like the Holtby signing but the goaltending will be weaker than next year. They probably try and bring Toffoli back

Hopefully poor asset management doesnt ruin a team that has been looking as promising as any team in the league the last year.

This was a big L for the Canucks. Considering Stecher is from Vancouver I doubt he wouldn't have taken this same contract with the Canucks.

He's not a top 4 D but he would have helped give the Canucks depth on their right side.

Now the free agent pool is very thin. I think Hamonic may be the only good option for them now.

Smart move on both sides of the deal. Detroit its a good young guy with lots of life ahead of him and Stech gets to play on a team that will definitely get him ice time and will be relying on him for lots of minutes. I think this is a great opportunity for him to really develop into a solid hockey player. Smart move.

$6,000,000 is not an overpay for Markstrom (0.918 SV%).
$4,300,000 is a massive overpay for Holtby (0.897 SV%).
Markstrom is drastically better.

$4,500,000 is not an overpay for Christopher Tanev.
$6,000,000 is a massive overpay for Tyler Myers.
Tanev is drastically better.

The only reason Vancouver missed out is because Benning can't manage the cap:

$6,000,000 = Eriksson
$6,000,000 = Myers
$4,400,000 = Sutter
$4,300,000 = Holtby (0.897 SV%)
$3,500,000 = Ferland
$3,400,000 = Baertschi (Minors)
$3,000,000 = Luongo (Penalty)
$3,000,000 = Roussel
$3,000,000 = Beagle
$2,000,000 = Benn
$1,000,000 = Spooner (Buyout)

That's 40 million dollars right there ... I mean .. WOW.

He definitely missmanaged the cap in the past. My bet is he was not willing to mess up by paying any guys too much this year.

They know the situation is dire next year. That's the big year - there's no room for more screwups.

In two years the Flames will have Tanev/Markstom on a similar list of bad contracts. They were overpaid.

Despite Holtby's year, he's gone in one year.

The Holtby contract is actually 2 years long.

So he'll still be on the books when they need to sign Pettersson, Hughes and Demko.

But Sutter, Baertschi and Benn will be gone next year.

And I'm sure they'll be able to offload some bad contracts if needed, most will be in their final year.

They're hoping Holtby bounces back and is taken by Seattle. Though with all the great goalies in the NHL these days, Seattle will have plenty of options to choose from

Ha! Any team would kill to have their 2RD make this little. Slowly but surely, DET can return to its former glory. With enough smart moves, Greiss might even still be around when the rebuild is over!
