Martinez for Cole

Description
*Coming from an Avalanche perspective, looking for a Vegas take*

Does this deal make sense for the Knights? Obviously they’re trying to move money out to sign Pietrangelo. Cole brings a lot of the same qualities as Martinez in the defensive zone, and off the ice with leadership and experience. Cole is more rugged and physical. Martinez is a better puck mover, a better skater, and a better overall player in my opinion.
Both players are going into the final year of their contracts.
Colorado gets an upgrade over Ian Cole without giving up an asset. Martinez can step into their top 4 and potentially play with Cale Makar while their other young defensemen continue to develop. They should have enough wiggle room to add the cap hit.
Things seem to be much tighter for Vegas as they chase down another big piece. The advantage here is the additional $1.875M in cap space, while also getting a somewhat comparable player back. Cole would be a solid 3rd pair D and penalty killer on their roster (assuming Pietrangelo signs).

Does that cap space move the needle for Vegas? Does this type of veteran D-for-veteran D trade even make sense for them?

I don't see why there's retention looks like VGK would need to add. Both LD veterans with cup experience that can play both sides. Honestly don't see the fit as Graves plays with Makar in top 4 already.

This would be like if the Caps and Pens made a swap two years ago. They're both the top teams in the west, so it's just not going to happen.

Pretty sure they wanna move Schmidt with Fleury.

If they move Martinez it would be for picks only (maybe a 2nd) because they need the cap space if they sign Pietrangelo.

As the description says... Colorado retains salary because Vegas is looking for cap relief. By retaining salary, the Avs upgrade from Cole to Martinez without giving up another asset.
Graves had an excellent first full season in the NHL, but he’s probably not the long-term answer as Makar’s partner, especially with Bowen Byram on the way. Even if Graves and Makar comes back together as a pair in the coming season, Martinez improves their defense.

The Schmidt rumors were all over Twitter this afternoon. I think he would be a terrific piece for the Avalanche to add, but as @Foppa21 points out, it would be unlikely for conference rivals to help each with a major deal like that.
I haven’t seen anything concrete about Fleury recently, but I’m sure they would like to move his money. I think it would take more than trading Schmidt to make room for Pietrangelo and to fill out their roster.

I read it still doesn't make sense. Mainly because of the two teams involved. COL is not going to help another top 4 contender in the West sign a top 3 league wide dman for the chance that Martinez is a slight upgrade over Cole or Graves.

I would argue that Martinez is more than a slight upgrade over either of those guys, but I get what you’re saying about Vegas and Colorado not wanting to help one another

we want petro not Ian cole, and if we can't have petro we would just stick with the lineup we got going with right now.
