Exploring SJ Roster Holes and All the Excellent Free Agents Wilson Missed Out On

Created by: CheechYou
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 12, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Doug Wilson has shown a complete incompetence in team strategy one way or another.

Many people clam for a rebuild. Given the way the roster is constructed with the no-trade-clauses and egregious contract terms (thank you Wilson), this is very difficult to achieve. Unless Wilson is somehow able to move out contracts for good value, this is unlikely.

Given this, Wilson should build as deep a roster possible under the weight of the salary cap. So many free agents this year that could have helped this team have a legitimate chance to contend, as listed below. He does not go after a SINGLE ONE, and instead raves about how much two resignings in Noesen and an-overpaid-but-forgivable-if-other-moves-are-made-to-supplement-this-overpayment Labanc mean to the team.

Summary: Wilson insists on either remaining in the mid-tier of NHL teams purgatory with a bleak future to look forward to at best, or on becoming bottom-dwellers without recuperating future assets for existing players who have whatever value left getting less and less by the year.

Look, I know free agency has its risks, and so many people for instance in 2016 were going after Wilson for not signing guys like Loui Eirksson and Kyle Okposo. Kudos to Wilson for being aware. But there are some AMAZING deals without much term or even cap in this market to go after, and we're blessed to have an owner that lets us spend to the cap.

But he does nothing, as he's done throughout his entire tenure as a Sharks GM in the Free Agency department if we exclude Rob Blake and Paul Martin. Nothing! Not another single noteworthy/impactful signing! That's almost two decades of Free Agency incompetence -- enough is enough! No more either doing nothing or signing Adam Burish and Melker Karlsson to 4-year deals and pretending like it's going a big deal or going to have a big impact. Or going after Colin White Michael Haley Jody Shelley John Scott or all the other depth guys he's gone after and pretending like it's going to have a big impact. Noesen's that guy this year, and while I'm GLAD he's back, I HATE how every year they focus in on a 4th liner or random depth defenseman the first day of free agency and celebrate the signing as if we won the cup.

It's time for a change. Bring in Dubas's assistant to replace him.

I’m an oilers fan so I’m biased but I don’t think Barrie is a bottom pair defenseman,

I know I'm a habs fan and honestly I'm looking at SJ and was very surprised they didn't do that much. I think Dubnyk was an error Wilson should have kept that money for a guy like Toffoli or Wennberg. There are still FA out tgere but I don't think a Matt Martin or a Derick Brassard are going to solve SJ depth problems

Can't really blame the GM for UFAs choosing to join a contender. Can certainly weigh whether re-signing Braun would have made more sense than trading him, and whether Bobby Ryan would be more valuable this year than the prospect who will develop in his spot.

Benning could have realistically joined SJ. They didn't finish that much worse than NSH, but realistically, he's not getting a top four spot in SJ on the right side in the next decade. In NSH, there's a 50/50 shot he's paired with Ekholm, and a 1% chance he gets to play with Josi.

Missing out on Janmark, though, that's just silly.

Definitely not bottom-pairing, but he would've made a great add. I know he in particular received many offers more than for what he signed, so maybe he's not the best example here, but he would've nonetheless made a perfect signing at even 4.5mil over 3yrs had Wilson moved Burns for Voracek or elsewhere, or another big contract for something else. I'm really not sure given how the roster's constructed and how SJ did last season doesn't signal that changes need to be made. Whether by addition or subtraction, ideally both.

This team's so far removed from the 2019 roster that was a few injuries away from winning the cup and 2 games away from getting there: no more Pavs (good move actually on DW for letting him go, since SJ needs the cap space to SIGN CHEAPER, YOUNGER, MORE COST-EFFECTIVE FREE AGENTS MISSED OUT and listed here), Nyquist, Donskoi, Braun. I'm fine with not re-signing any of those guys, but REPLACE THEM with very decent contracts like the ones given out above in the last few days.

Forgive my anger... I'm a Sharks fan...

I was really interested in guys like Jesper Fast, Carter Verhaeghe & Trevor van Riemsdyk that could have helped but of course none of them happened

Thing is, I would've been fine with what we now know would be considered as 'overpaying' for any of those guys. Like Fast. Instead a 2x3, I would've been fine with signing him to a 3x3, which is a 33% overpay. Or signing Craig Smith to a 4.5x2 instead of 3.1 (!). Or Toffoli to a 5x4 instead of 4.25. Or Benning to a 2x1 instead of 1x2.

I like to think that these UFAs wouldn't have passed up such offers.

Half of the Caps fans want to give away Nick Jensen now that WSH got TVR. I'm not among them, so not making an offer, but it could probably happen.

You can blame the GM actually. He’s built a team culture in recent years, hasn’t lobbied with the city to provide better living for player, hasn’t worked to create good business structure (the sharks business side of things is a massive Shi*Show), and hasn’t created a salary structure attractive to FA. Players and agents see this and stay away.
