Holy crap I hate this trade

Created by: Hawkisles
Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 12, 2020
Published: Oct. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Toews is a top 4 guy now and had top pairing potential. Neither of those picks will get a return that even resembles that.
2. Our left side on defense just got a lot worse, and now we’re pretty much forced to keep Leddy, who was our best option for a trade that could drop cap without throwing away future assets. Losing Leddy through waivers would have been better on all fronts than this.
3. Those 2nd Rounders will, at best, be used to drop a bad contract, but I feel like we have enough prospects in our system where if a team demanded the equivalent of 2 2nd rounders in futures, we could have supplied that.
3. Even from a cap clearing perspective, Toews was the one who wanted the least money. Trading Pulock would have been the better option. There are more right shots still on the market, he would have yielded a much better return and we still have Wilde and Dobson to replace him in the long term. You can’t tell me Aho or Bolduc will effectively fill in for Toews, short or long term.

Hated it at first I’m coming around to it a bit.. definitely undervalue imo but considering the contract ask is reportedly extremely high I’ll wait and see that before giving complete judgement.. also if they dump boychuk and grab Hoffman I think it works cause I’m a huge fan of the defensive prospect pool and Dobson should be able to take over Toews role on the powerplay starting this season

Does the trade look bad? Yes. But the fact that no truly bad contracts have successfully been moved across the league yet tells me that it’s not as easy as people on capfriendly keep saying. Johnsson, Murray, and Stastny are about the worst that have been moved, and all 3 have use to their new teams. I’m surprised Leddy wasn’t moved, but if no teams will take him they had to make room for Barzal/Pulock before an OS was dropped - if there’s belief we’ll see one this year.

I doubt Lou moved Toews if he could’ve first moved Leddy. Probably no interest in him because of the cap hit.

Sorry, man, but the Avs are thankful. Isles just couldn't afford all of Barzal, Toews and Pulock. And nobody has room to take on guys like Leddy or Boychuk.

Wow wow wow slow down, I know this trade hurts and yes he was a good Top 4 Dman but it is difficult to trade contracts worth 5.5 and 6million in a cap strapped league, you need to give up something Important to deal something important in return.
By the way giving up a Top 2 dman elite top 4 in Pulock that plays more mins than Toews would set the team further back . Let’s see if Lou addresses the winger issue that plaques this team

Watch Eichel leave when his contract is up just like Tavares, Hall won’t change the Sabres sorry state of an franchise

It’s definitely possible, but I think it’s more likely they couldn’t trade Leddy with his backloaded contract.

F*ck trotz though if that’s the case. He preferred brooks Orpik over Nate Schmidt which is why washinton left him exposed in the expansion draft

I’m scared Barzal imagines that and doesn’t wanna play for Barry as a coach

If that’s truly the case, then Varlamov, Bailey and Eberle are all players worth their big contracts. I’d much rather give up an aging impact player than a rising star.

Barzal probably does want to have a bit more freedom, but he has no rights and will be an islander for at least the next 4 years. The hope is him and trotz can compromise - this is barzal’s team

franchise player over coach anyways - this is not trotz team, its barzal. If barzal wouldn't sign because of trotz (unlikely), you get rid of the coach.

Then he goes to arbitration which could b a yikes, maybe I’m thinking too far into the future, although not looking far enough in the future is what’s screwing us now
