Benning sucks. Could have had Tanev (whose only 1 year older) for 1.5mil less and keep that 3rd! Bad asset management by Benning, meanwhile he lets another team off the hook and out of cap hell....and gives up a decent draft pick to do so? while his own team remains in caphell??? one of Bennings bad contracts shouldve gone the other way (and there is plenty to choose from).

While I agree with your take Vegas was never taking on money.

Not sure if your being sarcastic or not. Schmidt >>> Tanev

Different styles of play- I think the Canucks need a pure shot blocker like Tanev more, but Schmidt has much more offense to his game, and isnt lost in his own zone either. IF they didnt have cap issues- then 5.9 for a dman like Schmidt isnt terrible...but they do, and they just helped out a team with HUGE issues- and a deadline to sign AP! they shouldve got him for nothing,if not some cap relief (via contract dumping) or by Vegas keeping something of that contract.

Benning better have a cap wizard who can figure this out. This move makes it way harder to sign Hughes, Pettersson, and Demko when they become RFAs next year

It'll actually be better for Benning if Holtby plays as the clear cut #1. It'll help keep Demko's extension in check. But, obviously they'll have to ride the hot hand.

Great trade for both sides. Vancouver gets a solid second-pairing defensemen with good AAV and term and Vegas gets to clear cap space for Pietrangelo. Fair value all around.

People can say Vancouver "fleeced" Vegas but at the end of the day Vegas got Pietrangelo and had to adjust to the market.

Oh, indeed.

I don't understand how this is good for Vancouver... they let Toffoli walk for less, not to mention also letting Tanev, Markstrom, and Stretcher go. I'd argue that Schmidt is the worst of the bunch, and now Vancouver is even more cap-strapped and committed to Schmidt for 5 more years.

I voted Vancouver wins and then right after, I wished I had said "fair deal" because it is a win-win IMO.

I put fair trade, but I look at is Perto+3rd for Schmidt (used as a partial cap dump). Both teams are happy with that.

The cap hit is great but AP will be 31 when the season starts and 38 when this deal ends. It’s a terrible deal overall but great for the next 3-4 years but anytime you need to move a really good player to afford a different player makes me question roster management. Normal circumstances Schmidt could easily get a 1st now look what happened.

Yeah but if you view it like a trade, VGK basically flipped Schmidt and a 3rd for Pietrangelo.

Vancouver wins this deal. I know Vegas knows they are shedding cap space, but even if you take into account Vegas getting Pietrangelo, Vancouver still improves more. It's not that Schmidt is as good as Pietrangelo, but Vancouver adds Schmidt to a gaping hole in their line up, while Vegas just upgrades Schmidt to Pietrangelo. Schmidt is more of an improvement on nothing, then Pietrangelo is on Schmidt.

Personally, I don't think Vegas gains very much overall. The D they got is better, but a year older, and signed for 2 years longer at a nearly 50% raise over what they had. Part of what you pay AP for is his power play ability, but I am not convinced he takes the spot from Theodore, so they may not get full value for that. I don't think the gap between Schmidt and Pietrangelo at 5 on 5 is worth the extra $2.9M in cap hit, and the more risky years at the end of the deal.

Either way, Vancouver needed a good all round defensmen, and they get one for a 3rd who is on a solid contract. Good move for them.

Straight cap dump to sign Alex for Vegas.

Vancouver just stole a top 4 dmen in the NHL.

It was a fleecing bc Vegas has terrible roster management

That's been since the beginning. They are trying to stack the roster when he doesn't know how much cap he has, and managing contracts terribly.

RL was a dumb signing (great aav) when you knew you had to dump MAF... now he has 12m in goal they had to dump their 2nd best D man for a 3rd....they have no 2nd line center. People on this site claiming they "trade Schmidt for AP and a 3rd" no they over spent on AP and they were forced to give Schmidt away

Schmidt has over 300 blocked shots over the same 3 year period as tanev, tanev had 40 more

Trade wise this is an obvious win for Vancouver.
However organizationally its a win for both teams. I think Vegas could have possibly gotten more in return though.

in this world. Stecher is actually my favorite player in the league, even before Gallagher. He is a shot-blocking, defensively gifted defenceman who is good on the PK. Schmidt's offensive 'strength' basically comes from being on the same PP as Stone, Patches, Marchessault, etc. IMO Stecher>>Schmidt in terms of all around game
