Does this have any legs?

Lightning save $650K and might be easier flipping Smith since he's only getting $2.3M in cash and is expiring. Let me know what you think!

NYR adds a late pick and I'd say it's good. They're getting the better player after all.

Damn, didn't realize TJ had 4 years left. I'd say that's worth it with like a 6th rounder.

Considering the cap situation, don't you'd think they add?

Well, no body took him off waivers so he's only being moved with an enticing sweetener.

The actual cap is pretty much even. The difference comes in term and level. Imo Johnson's that much better player that TB should receive a pick, but that's just my opinion.

This wouldn't be done with just the hope of moving Smith, but I think as mentioned by someone else NY gets something in return for taking on Johnson.

But dumping Brendan Smith might only cost a 3rd, maybe a 2nd. Johnson at $5M for 4 years would cost a 1st from any team.

I meant this would only happen if a 3rd trade partner was found in advance of the trade taking place.

A 3 team trade might be how the Johnson trade saga ends, but that likely won't be anytime soon.

Oh ok. So something like this?

New York Rangers
- Tyler Johnson (from TB)
Tampa Bay Lightning
- Brendan Smith (from NYR)
Ottawa Senators
- Brendan Smith (from TB)
- 2021 3rd (from TB)

Yes. Rangers probably still get a 5-7rd pick though.

Tampa. Maybe Ottawa sends a 7th or something to Tampa and Tampa sends a round higher to NY. More years on Johnson's contract, so that's my reasoning.

TJ for 4 more years is like resigning Smith for that length. Makes Zero sense! Simply make future NYR teams. TJ btw is just as irrelevant as Smith, especially in the future.

Honestly couldn't see either team doing it, yea it saves TB 650k this year and space next year but hardly helps them sign Serg and Cirelli. From the Rangers stand point, like the other guy said, I don't wan Johnson for 4 years. Who knows what its gonna cost to sign Kakko and Laf in a few years.

Expose the Spokane, Washington native to the Seattle Kraken in next years expansion draft ..... ? he could be a swell fit for an expansion team, versatile as he plays all forward postings & he's won a Cup .. Or facilitate a trade with Seattle, where they take TJ (get a 2nd/3rd round pick) & NYR can pick who they take in the expansion.
NYR could end up keeping another younger asset, gives Chytil another year to hopefully, develop into a 2C ...

Considering no ones Is claiming him he’s gonna cost money to dump and in early stages guys were saying it might cost a first to move him bc of his term, would rather him and a 1st and then trade smith in a separate trade. But then again I don’t think he’s a good player anymore so wouldn’t take the chance

I'll take him along with a 1st and flip Smith for a 3rd lol.
