Moving Reaves and McNabb for compliance

Created by: rja
Team: 2020-21 Vegas Golden Knights
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 14, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Vegas still needs to move some players in order to be cap compliant (something management said they would be by the start of the season. Vegas could either move a big contract to free up salary to help fill spots, or they can "trim the hedges." I believe because Vegas is looking to win it all, they will go with the latter.

Though they are able to trim the hedges, they have to move enough salary to ensure they fill their spots (let's go with 20 skaters and 2 goalies). Based on their contracts, it looks like they need to move a little north of 4 million to fit comfortably under the cap. McNabb and Reaves accomplish this feat. I am sure some people would prefer if Vegas moves Carrier over Reaves, but I am unsure teams want to commit to 4 years to any player given the circumstances. Reaves seems like the more attractive piece, and you still have physical players you can replace Reaves with. As for McNabb, I think they prefer to keep Martinez if possible, and I think there will be teams interested in the defensive defenseman. Moving out the $4.25 million will help them fill roster spots.

CBJ and FLA are mere examples of teams that might trade for the aforementioned players. Like the Schmidt deal, it seems that Vegas has very little leverage and will trade those players for late round picks.

Lewis, Martin and Rutta are also examples of players that they may be able to sign for cheap (although its possible those players could go elsewhere for more or less). I do think they will opt to sign vets as opposed to bringing up youth, simply because the ELC bonuses can cause Vegas to pour over the salary cap and cause a penalty to them.

Let me know your thoughts about Vegas' precarious cap situation!

I heard the team is not happy with the trade of Schmidt. Trading Reaves would be pouring gasoline on the fire.

This might not be the place to ask this, but I'm just curious to ask a Vegas fan... is this team really better than last year? Is gaining Pietrangelo really worth losing your 2C, forward depth, and defense depth? I guess they thought they'd have an easy out by moving Fleury... but apparently nobody wanted him, and Lehner's shoulder surgery might've also forced their hand.

From the outside looking in, this roster just looks worse than last year... and that's if they go this route, and not the Marchessault route via rumors. Curious to know what Vegas fans think.

The Jackets would gladly trade for Marchesseault to relieve the $5M burden.
In order for no/minimal salary to come back, they would probably have to trade Texier and a pick (but not a 1st, as the Jackets would not trade another 1st away for quite a while).

From a fan perspective Statsny lost his 2C position in the playoffs and was losing it before the pandemic happened. They believe Glass can step up and Statsny's production has been falling off quickly even when surrounded by talent. Losing Schmidt sucked, not going to sugar coat it. I believe Schmidt is a casualty of Pietro will play the same position as Schmidt and Theodore will be playing the right side too.

As to Fleury I believe management ****ed up because they were too proud. The problem with Fleury isn't that no one wanted him but that other teams wanted too much from Vegas to move him. The management group should have just sucked it up and given 1st+2nd to the team that was offering to be the middle man. The offer was there to take the full salary before FA and they were too full of themselves thinking when goalie frenzy was over they could get closer to the offer they wanted.

Forward production going to be the same realistically. Defense is going to be a toss up if they move McNabb, Hague and Bischoff are both NHL ready. That cap on the bench every game is going to suck though. So I guess TLDR the team looks like they could be roughly the same as last year

Good lord, that all sounds horrible. Let's not do this.

We'll give the Knights Riley Nash and a 2022 2nd for Alex Tuch and a 2022 5th, saving the Knights $2M in the process. But subtracting Texier is an extremely bad idea, even before trading away draft capital.

Possibly, or it's too late anyway. This seemed like the most likely solution without sacrificing assets. Sorry for the late response hahah.
