Description

We'd try to trade Engvall & Holl, but given the COVID flat cap and declining revenues, it's possible no team wants them. As such, we'd bury the contracts in the AHL which would cost us $175k on Engvall and $925k on Holl... but give us $2.15m in cap relief.

Mikheyev is expected to get $1.25m-$1.50m in arbitration so I went with the higher amount for 2 years. Dermott doesn't have arbitration rights so doesn't really have any options other than sitting out the season - which would be foolish. As such, I signed him and Joey Anderson to identical $900k x 1 year "show me" deals which I think is reasonable in the current environment.

We run a roster of 22 players instead of 23, but that's manageable when our AHL team is in the same city as the NHL team. It puts us a mere $35k under the cap but injuries would allow us flexibility as we have plenty of cheap options in the minors: Robertson, Malgin, Korshkov as forwards and Sandin, Rosen as dmen.

or, we bury Marincin, leave bogosian as our 7th D, use the 6'4" 220 lbs Justin Holl who put up very decent numbers with Muzzin this year, and um... don't do this.

We could do better than Holl, but we could also do a lot worse imo

They have nine defensemen who should be ahead of him now, but somehow you still have Marincin on the team. Holl should be in the lineup over Bogosian and if teams are going to be allowed to carry some sort of taxi squad, as has been rumoured, then there's no need to carry more than 20 players on your active roster.

The problem with burying Marincin is that it only saves us $700k of cap space whereas burying Holl saves us $1.075m; I know it doesn't seem like much, but that's a sizeable difference for a team coming within $35k of the cap. I also don't think the Leafs added Bogosian to have him sit in the press box - he will definitely be in the lineup and probably seeing 13-15 mins a night on the 3rd pair.

If what you're saying about taxi squads is true then I'm all for carrying just 20 guys, but if we eliminate Marincin and Boyd at $700k apiece, that's still not enough to roster Holl's $2m cap hit. We'd have to cut another guy and run short on the offence with 11 guys instead of 12... OR cut a dman and play Holl instead. Only option they'd consider is Dermott as Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie and Lehtonen aren't going anywhere and this team didn't sign Bogosian to sit in the minors.
