Marner Trade

Created by: DartGuy86
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 14, 2020
Published: Oct. 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Moving Marner for cap relief. Obviously leaves us thin on the wings, but also leaves enough cap space to bring in another winger in the 2-3mil range and still leave money open to resign Hyman next year. Not sure if the value is quite right in terms of cap space/cash value considering the times we're in, but I think this is the type of move we can expect to see some time within the next 12 months.

Columbus doesn’t accept that offer - I doubt they accept almost any offer.

Seth Jones played an hour in a single nhl game and honestly didn’t look like. It would have to be an unreasonable payment for him to be moved right now seeing as they are competing

Edit: to add jones comes in at just over 10 mil in two years compared to marners 20+ mil in that same span of cap hit totals. Jones would obviously be commanding 7-10 mil after that but still you’d save money and have a better player by just keeping Jones.

Marner is a fantastic player but on a defense-first team Jones is our rock. If you're interested in Werenski we're talking but even then Marner's cap hit scares me

You could be right. I was basing this solely off of the idea that Columbus tried to offer sheet Marner, so I know there is interest there.

Columbus has cap space, and more importantly for a team like CBJ, Marner's contract is almost half paid already. Getting a 10+mil winger for something like 8mil a year after this season.

It’ll be interesting to see what they do now. I honestly thought they’d be big money in on Pietro - I think they definitely need to spend that money first on Dubois but fill the holes next

Marners value as a winger < Jones value as a defender

Money don’t matter - and cap hit wise Marner will cost more overall. Even after Jones’ raise he’s likely save cap hit

Okay, money wise what you’re saying makes sense, and given the success CBJ has had they don’t really have a reason to shake things up. I’m curious about your opinion though... what kind of dman do you think would be fair value for a player like Marner?

Well this is how I’m viewing Marner :

Firstly I think Marner is overrated and just not a fan

Secondly Marner is a valuable asset to any team; incredibly talented, has a great set of tools in his box, and is very good defensively and has only gotten better and actually shown he’s interested in player defence and putting himself on the line to win games.

Thirdly I think Marner is overpaid....but also not super overpaid.

I dislike Marner and like to hate on him, but I’d like to think I also objectively rate him without using my bias (like I hate McDavid but I think McDavid is the best player in the world)

If I had to trade Marner I’d be trading him for a top pair defender (not top4 but top 2, or top4 plus some very quality assets added).

If I was trading for Marner I’d only offer a top4 (plus assets).

You get what i mean? Like he’s maybe overpaid at 10 mil but like he’s a pretty damn good 8.5-9 player you know?

If you and other leafs fans wanna discuss im all ears as it’s an interesting convo to have (Marner, many things to be able to talk about).

I think your assessment is pretty fair. I think it was an optimistic signing, as in the mgmt team expecting the contract to age well as the cap continued to go up. But obviously that isn't the case anymore, and we have 3 of these things, so one has to go. I can see the Leafs settling for a top4 dman and a 2RW coming back. Fans will hate it regardless but it is what it is.
