Now if I'm being honest, I don't think this is realistic. But, I honestly don't think it's the worst thing ever. Although, I think *IF* Toronto were to do anything like this, I would rather them offer sheet Cernak rather than trade for him. The advantage of this, is that the Leafs get to choose what price they approach him with and if he accepted, it would put Tampa in a really tough spot. They could match the offer and struggle through the cap implications, or they could give him up and the Leafs would only have to give up a 1st and a 3rd. Now again, not realistic, but if it happened and the right price was offered, regardless of the outcome it could be a win-win for Toronto

I agree it is but trading for him is a guarantee you get him whereas an offer sheet still leaves the door open to be matched. Top 4 RHD never come cheap so I'm fine with an overpay to solidify the D.

Ya for sure, I just see a trade as more of a sure thing than an offer sheet. They're so uncommon and can still be matched so I'd rather go with a sure thing. For sure it's an overpay although I'm sure some Tampa fans will chime in with "we hang up the phone for a package like that!" but for a Top4 RHD an overpay is necessary.

Ya exactly, but my point is more pushing to put Tampa in literal "cap hell" or for them to give up a great young top 4 defencemen to a divisional team that is probably their biggest competition as Boston will be surely taking a step back. Offer sheet puts the pressure on Tampa, trade puts the pressure on the Leafs, if that makes sense at all

I get wanting another RD, but you have to have cheep young players to plug in too. Loosing Liljegren, Holl, Dermott & Hållander hurts in the long run, with $40+ Million on 4 players.

I get what you mean, I'm looking at it more from a cost certainty standpoint considering the cap will likely be flat for a few years. So locking up a top 4 that solid on D for a few years is ideal through the flat cap time period in my eyes. I hate to admit our championship window is likely not as big as we want to think it is so the time to strike is the next 1-3 years.

Ya that totally makes sense. I mean it could go either way, my mind just looks for the certainty rather than hoping Tampa doesn't match. I get both sides of it for sure.
