Realistic best case

Created by: arafay
Team: 2020-21 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 15, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Both heinola and Samberg emerge as top 4 options this season giving us 3 very good pairings. Roslovic also breaks out for 40+ points pace in a bottom 6 role leading up to the tdl.

The first 2 are offseason moves and the last 3 are tdl moves.

Seeing the potential in Roslovic, a team like jersey take a chance on him and gets picks and prospects to boot. The jets get severson who adds a big shot to the first power play and bolsters the defence.

I personally don’t like the idea of trading poolman but we have too many d at that point and beaulieu isn’t going anywhere with his 2 years and I’d rather have a guy like forbort for playoffs.

Lines and pairings before tdl (after tdl are below of course):
Connor-Scheifele-Wheeler
Laine-Stastny-Ehlers
Copp-Lowry-Haula
Harkins-Roslovic-Appleton
thompson

Morrissey-demelo
Samberg-pionk
Heinola-poolman
Forbort-beaulieu

Sorry for the trade description in the last trade. There’s supposed to be a period in there lol

As I said, “best case” so this assumes some steps forward from certain players but not huge steps. For example, if rolsovic can conjure to play the way he played on the play in round, he’s going to be at 40 points pace easily imo. If heinola is on the team, he will be very good. It’s that simple. They have to beat our vets like beaulieu and forbort so they better come to training camp ready. If they are on the team, that part of this best case instantly becomes a reality.

Finally, I don’t think that severson trade is too unrealistic if Roslovic can take that step forward. If any forward can get near 40 points in a bottom 6 role with limited opportunities like Roslovic, they are a top 6 player. So Roslovic is obviously the main piece. A 2nd rounder from a couple of years ago in lundmark is a potential long term top 4 replacement for severson while the 2nd is a 2nd. I could make it a continual 2nd that becomes a first if the jest make the wcf for example.

This team is a serious contender imo. No real holes in the lineup. Could add a better 4c but one of perfetti or gustafsson might come up for playoffs.

  1. Tuomisto, Antti [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
At 19, tourist is yet to play pro in Finland but is a university of denver commit and has potential. Could be a top 4 guy but a good get for niku who hasn’t had much opportunity in Winnipeg. Similar to the regula for perlini trade last season.
DET
  1. Niku, Sami [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Similar players but niku is nhl ready now and is more of a certain thing. Niku can move into the young d-core with the wings And contribute and turn into a focal point of their blue line.

Additional Details:
Considering he will likely be playing next to heinola and he had 15 points in a shortened season (COVID plus injury) already, he’s probably a 20 point guy so I don’t think this is completely unreasonable considering what some defensemen went for this year

Wings decline. We'd rather see how Antti develops.

Pass from Detroit. The reason Tuomisto didn’t go pro was because he’s always wanted to go the NCAA route. We don’t need an NHL ready d at the moment considering we already have a logjam on D.

I think you are right in that this team is likely a playoff team.

As for NJD trades, I think the window has closed to acquire Severson (there are no replacements available). And while I like Roslovic, I don't think he would be the 'get' if they did chose to sell Severson. More likely it would be package centered around Heinola and/or Samberg.

Tuomisto has way more potential than Niku, bad for Detroit

Fair enough. Could just be for a 3rd to any team too. Also, they probably have similar potential (top 4) but niku is more of a sure bet. Though if you have a log jam right now, it doesn’t make sense

I don’t think New Jersey will be very good again, so they will be looking to sell. Moving sevevson here gives them a top 6 forward (which Roslovic will be if he can get 40 pts in a bottom 6 role) a b prospect and a 2nd. As I said, I could make the 2nd a first but this is at least enticing.

And there is no way the jets move heinola or Samberg (unless it’s for a guy like sergachev or pulock). They are almost as untouchable as perfetti.

Log jam is problematic and also expansion draft planning as Tuomisto is exempt while Niku isn’t. I’m not saying he’d be picked but that is leverage Yzerman has on teams if they have 4+ quality d-men and decide to go 7-3-1. I also don’t know if I’d label Niku as a more sure bet top 4 guy so there really isn’t any incentive from Detroit to make the move.

Log jam? Have you looked at Detroit's home page on CapFrienly.com? Detroit has 2 defensemen and 3 prospects signed for the 2021-22 season. Out of all the new players Yzerman signed 3 of them have 2yr contracts and only 1 of those is a defenseman the rest are all on 1yr deals. Even if Detroit has 3 prospects that are NHL ready next year, those players on 1yr deals are little more than place holders. Now can you explain how trading a defenseman for a defenseman would help with this so called log jam? Niku is 24 and still bouncing between the NHL and the AHL and with the amount of turnover on Winnipeg D last off season you'd think he'd have no problem earning a roster spot. Tuomisto was an early 2nd round pick who has received a lot of praise and press on how well he has been playing. So I have to agree with the other Wing's fans here the value isn't very good for Detroit.

Niku should have been a regular 2 years ago. But then he was blocked behind a high end defence and now he’s blocked behind a bunch of vets and heinola and Samberg. That said, I do don’t think toumosito was that valuable since he didn’t play in the liiga all year. As I said, it can be a 3rd rounder instead. I just though that niku would be a very good add for Detroit. With near 20 mins a night he could easily net 30 pts in a season imo. That said, if you don’t want him, there will be other takers
