The problem with Marner for Laine is fit. Laine is incredible and I have no problem with value (I think we win), its that Tavares and Matthews are both goal scorers, pairing one with Laine seems poorly planned

I don't see Winnipeg taking on Marner's horrific contract.

Laine is going to ask for somewhat close to what Marner is getting and Marner is a way better player then Laine lol. This would be a no brainer.

What? do you think Laine is going to accept 7x7 or something, no he won't. Marner does way more to impact the game then Laine, that is pretty easy to tell lol. I like Laine but he isn't the second coming of Ovi or something like everyone thinks

Okay, so it's your own made up, worst case assumption of what Laine is going to ask for. He won't get anywhere close to that unless he scores 60 goals next year. As it is now, Marner fills no need for the Jets and is grossly overpaid. The Jets would be unbalancing their salary structure even more with a trade like this.

if Laine would accept 7x7 you would hear absolutely no rumours of trade at all. Besides, Paul Maurice is a clown who doesn't know how to use him properly anyways, so might as well get something for him instead of wasting his career.

The Jets still have three years of control with Laine. I highly doubt Chevy will panic and just take anything like opposing fans are hoping. Chevy has proved to be very patient, so I doubt Laine moves in the near future unless Chevy gets exactly what he is asking for.

If you don't think that Winnipeg takes that and runs, your out of your mind. Regardless of what you think about the Marner contract because I too believe it is too high an AAV, Winnipeg gets the better player in that scenario.

Laine has:
1. Proved to be one of the streakiest players in the league
2. Proved to be a downside on the defensive end
3. Cannot add anything to a teams penalty kill
4. Cannot drive the play of a line without the help of other high-level talent

Marner can do almost all of those things that Laine struggles with, with a pretty good outcome. Doubt you get a better return for a guy that has made it abundantly clear he has no interest in staying with the Winnipeg organization.

If you think Winnipeg takes that deal, you're out of your mind. They get a marginal improvement that is severely overpaid and only shows up in easy games and disappears when the going gets tough.

I doubt Chevy would follow Toronto's example and unbalance his roster even more than it is now. Marner simply isn't a need and wouldn't be considered. If Laine moves I would imaging a top 4D is the main piece coming back.

I fully understand the need for a top 4 defenseman in return, but the value of return on Marner would be much higher. Don't let the anti-Leafs narratives fill your head with misconceptions on how bad Marner is in comparison with his contract. He's one of the top wingers in the NHL that when not producing, still has a tremendous impact on the game, which is not exactly how anyone would describe Laine.

You can fantasize about it all you want, but don't let the Toronto homerism cloud your judgment. There isn't $4 mil difference between Marner and Laine. As much as the Leafs would love the deal, it just serves no purpose for Winnipeg and Marner's horrific contact would limit his value in any trade especially in a flat cap era.

Firstly, let me reiterate, I don't want this deal. Secondly, I don't think there are many respected analysts in the world that would prefer Laine to Marner on their team. Now lastly, as I said before, I agree that Marner is being overpaid, while I don't think a horrific contract is the best way to phrase it, he is overpaid nonetheless. Just because half 90% of NHL fans hate the Leafs, doesn't mean you can just disregard the numbers, eye test and the respected analysts that know more about the game then anyone using Armchair GM could ever hope to know.
