the leafs have been there since 1967...

if you had bothered to research why its quite simple from 1969 Harrold Barllord took over the leafs and for 21 years drove away star talent and like Melnyk refused to pay his guys. It got so bad the league was planning to oust him as the owner. What saved him is that in 1990 he died. Great except he did to much damage and it took till 2002 for them to finally build a good team again and from 2000-2004 the leafs were one of the scariest teams teams in the league. To bad the team was not young though and the guys retired. Now bring in Burke who decides to take the leafs on one of the worst rebuilds of all time. Pays 2 1sts for Phil Kessel. What did those 2 firsts become (Seguin and Hamilton). Purgatory finally ended when Shanahan came along and re did the leafs management from top to bottom bringing in Lou Lamoriello, Mark Hunter, and Kyle Dubas, and in 2015 the stage was set, they tanked, got Matthews, and from there the rebuild was done. Now the leafs are in a new area I like to call the Capitals era. The leafs are now the Washington Capitals, by which they got the roster but they did not have success in the playoffs. Once Washington beat Pittsburgh it was straight to the finals and bam cup. If leafs pass R1 they are going straight to the finals as once they pass the hurdle their confidence should go up. Now its not a given that they go straight to the cup but passing r1 is a start.

Good thing you mentioned that his speed is slowing down. Last thing the Leafs need is speed. Always welcomed, but we have enough. Makes this signing even better

I hope he excels there, just glad he’s not in San Jose

Dermotts taking his QA as he has no arbitration rights, Mikheyev 1.5mill so all we need to do is send Holl down and we got the space. Basically nobody needs to get traded Engvall and Holl would have to be buried but meh its fine.

Holl could get traded but rn no need to.

Mikheyev and Dermott getting more than the space available. Something else has to give.

Don’t even have to go that far.

Everyone always forgets replacement cost. Leafs run 21 man roster and Dermott/Mikheyev take 2.34 m you need to subtract at least 1.4m for the players they replace if you run a 22 man roster you have to subtract at least 700k.

3 RFA's need to be signed still, zero cap space....trade coming, Dermott, Holl or Kerfoot, taking bets.

They have about $1.6M in cap space currently with a 21 player roster. At least $1.4M would be moved by waiving two league min salaries to make room on the roster for Dermott and Mikheyev. So if both are signing for less than $1.5M as is expected they could sign both without making a trade. I do think Engvall gets moved, and if they want to make other roster changes maybe Kerfoot, but it isn't a requirement.

If your idea of going for it is signing a bunch of other bottom sixers I have some bad news for you

Well when your top six is already:

Matthews
Tavares
Marner
Nylander
Hyman
(Mikheyev)
(Robertson)

What you do is ...

Sign a bunch of bottom sixers.

Toronto is now an elderly residence of hometown players. Spezza, Simmons and now Thornton.

Simmonds + Spezza + Thornton:

108 = Total Age
3 Years = Total Term
$2,900,000 = Total Cap Hit
$2,900,000 = Total Salary Owed

Weber + Petry + Price:

102 = Total Age
17 Years = Total Term
$24,700,000 = Total Cap Hit
$143,000,000 = Total Salary Owed

What's your point? Weber, Petry and Price are better players who can actually still play for years to come.

Also, if you are going to do a post like that at least get the numbers correct...

As a long time sharks fan this is a sigh of relief.

Understandable ... It's tough to spare $700,000 for a diminishing player.
Especially when you're already paying Karlsson + Vlasic + Burns + Jones + Couture + Kane around $50,000,0000 for the next 6-7 years.
I got you fam.

They'll all be great for the next 6 years.

they are 3 years removed from being 1 goal away from a cup final.... hard the chirp them.

They should make a documentary on how to kill a franchise in a two year span on Ottawa seriously.

I love Big Joe work ethic and his desire to win his first cup fired him up to keep working to achieve his goal. I hope Big Joe can finally win, cause he really deserves it. The guy is a future Hall of Famer. No-brainer. Good luck to him.

true. over 50 years of losing (or technically just not winning a cup) that I doubt can be described as "simple" lol
thanks for the leafs history tour though...

He is on my ignore list but every threads have messages of someone like you underlining his nonsense/habs bashing...

I guess you're right, maybe Jumbo Joe should have held out to collect a full 1 million $ contract than.

Spezza and Thornton are old. The age that Thornton is playing at is actually remarkable.

But Simmonds isn't old. He's declined sure, but he's younger than all of Petry, Weber, and Price.

Do they get a cup for that?

I mean 1967 was the last leafs Cup. Sweet how many cups claim. Lmfao is been half a century since the last leafs cup. Sens weren’ta team but they at least won a playoff series this decade.... idk what your point is. Again hard to chirp a team that has been more successful in the postseason more recently
