Short Cernak offer sheet read description

Description
So the point is to get an offer sheet that both the player wants to sign while the original team doesn't want to match. Contract structure is important.

One way is to structure it where the final year has higher salary, requiring a higher qualifying offer when the player is an RFA again. Basically a backloaded contract.

In this case Cernak could get $2.7 million in the first year of his contract and get $4.1 in his second year for a $3.4 million AAV. After the second year, the team would give him a $4.1 million qualifying offer or let him walk as a UFA. Tampa likely would not like this but it might be appealing for Cernak who will likely benefit by getting more money earlier in his career.

That works out pretty well for him then. He gets higher pay for his last 2 RFA years or the team lets him walk and he gets to UFA early.

Why let a good player walk for nothing? Gets assets back for a 26 year old top 4 RHD

They probably wouldn't but those would be the only two options. Pay him (or let someone else do it) or let him walk.

Tampa probably matches and then tries to make a trade before season starts

The really cruel thing to do would be offer sheet Cernal AND Cirelli, effectively forcing Tampa to choose one

If you match a offer sheet, you can't trade the player until the next calendar year (this will probably be adjusted with the season starting several months later than usual). But yeah, there is a rule there designed to stop teams from doing what you suggest, forcing teams to go into the season with the player they matched.

The cruelest thing would be three teams offer sheeting Cernak, Cirelli, and Sergachev on the same day.

I mean make a trade as in trade away a completely different player. Cernak and Cirelli are too valuable. If you gotta give up a different piece to keep them then so be it
