Why would Chicago make a trade for probably the worst contract in the league? Kane is still a better player at 31 than Marner is at 23. And Kane gets paid less.

worst contract in the league lmao
Marner is at best overpaid by MAX 2 million. Rantanen got 9.25M for 6 years in a state where he pays way less in taxes and marner has either matched or outpaced his point production in the last 2 seasons. Also, Rantanen is playing on arguably the best line in hockey with the best player on earth.
Marner just turned 23 and he basically has two 90 point seasons under his belt. Also, if you wanna talk value, this season he's making 750K, the season following $10M (9M signing bonus), and then straight $8M for the last 3 years just as he enters his prime. In a post-covid world, that's a pretty damn valuable contract for what is likely a 100+ point player

Rationalize any way you like. That contract is an albatross for the next few years. And what about the players you can't add because of the overpayment to Marner. It deprives you of other potential players.

If he's making 9.5M, that would basically let us a roster extra player at <$1M. Not exactly groundbreaking. You could argue if he was vaporized off of the roster we'd have a lot more flexibility, but we'd also have a gaping 95-100+ point hole in our top 6.
The leafs are perfectly able to construct a team around his contract. Better to overpay a star than overpay an aging forward or bottom 6 guys

This is a joke post right? Worst contract in the league? Marner is overpayed by about 2 mil, and is vastly better than Kane, its not even close. Kane's contract is worse than Marner's.

His contact is at most, a 2 mil overpayment. How much does a 2 mil player really do? If the leafs got another Holl, would it make them a much better team? Not really. I think by the end of his contract, we won't think he is overpayed.
Leafs get the same player at less money to try and win now.
Chicago gets the same player, higher cost, but 8 years younger and fits a rebuild situation better.
Your statement is wrong
