Still wrapping my head around this but it's really fascinating and I like the idea of the trade solely for the sake of retension, thanks for this interesting Agm

Throw Guentzel into the WPG trade and they might do it.

Pretty sure you can’t retain more than 50% on a contract. Not nearly enough for Laine. And the ducks trade makes zero sense for them still.

really liked Dugan in the NCAA. He should be fun to watch.

0 chance they can afford to resign both Marino and Laine.
I don't see him accepting a Guentzel level deal.

A lot of thought went into this and it looks pretty realistic except for the Laine deal imo. The jets don't have to move laine cause they have his rights for a couple more years, and they only would for an obvious improvement to the team right now. Zucker would be their 4th best winger behind Connor, Wheeler and Ehlers, and that doesn't get you a developing power forward with 50 goal potential

I'd rather have Jake. He too is a 40 goal scorer. And the rest of his game is actually good. Unlike Laine.

I think Dugan was my fav NCAA player (prob bc he's from PIT) but I love the kid.

But yah we easily could afford both of them, especially if Marino takes a bridge deal but we'd have to move Rust & either Pettersson / Mathy in Expansion or Trade and that would clear up $7.6 - $8.5m + 7.7m of Marino & Laines cap hits this yr + 4.25 of Haula / Ceci / Blueger / Janko =
      = Like $19.5m - $20.5m of Cap space to sign - Marino ($3.5-$4m if Bridge / $5.5-$6m if long term ) / Laine ($6.75-$8) / Blueger ($1m-$1.5m)

PLUS - Poulin could replace Rust, Roy could move over to 3C, Dugan or O'Conner get a spot, Mahura replaces LHD

But yah we could easily make it work.

Obviously the Jets wouldn't consider Laine for that, but if you retained on Zucker to make the salaries even and threw in a first the Jets may do Perreault.

No reason for them to help both teams out with the way the flat cap is. They get crap and take salary?! nope!

I believe Dugan is from Pittsford, NY, not Pittsburgh, PA (though the closeness in city names somewhat explains why people think he's from Pittsburgh). He's a hardcore Yankees fan, and NYR prior to being drafted by Vegas.

I don't think they sign Marino short term. But that's me. I think they are going to sign him to 8 years. It's best to do it now, incase the cap explodes with a new tv deal. It ends up being a value contract. I'm sure Marino side would want the opposite, but they will come to terms. He'll be 24 next year. That would put him to 32. Which is pretty much perfect. For both the team and the player. If he still has anything in the tank, he'll be able to sign another deal with term. etc... But if you extend that out on a bridge. It's probably less money in the long run. Because the next contract would probably be the last as it would push his age up to 35 etc..
So I imagine they work out a long term deal. He'll get paid well, and the team will wrap up a good player on a good contract over time.

I thought that for yrs to but Pens did it w/ Brassy & VGK did it w/ Lehner

the max that can be retained is 50 %. The way it was done is

There are a few key limitations:

‘Salary’ refers to remaining base player salary and bonuses, including signing bonuses.
The percentage retained cannot be more than 50 percent of the salary and cap hit.
The same percentage must be retained for both salary and cap hit. This cannot be altered from year to year.
Teams are limited to three retained salary contracts each season.
Teams cannot retain more than an aggregate amount of 15 percent of the salary cap upper limit. In 2014-15 that number is $10.35 million.
A player’s contract can only be traded twice in a retained salary transaction.
There are a few specific scenarios highlighted by the CBA to keep in mind.

How Do Retained Salary Trades Work?

The 2013 CBA gave teams the flexibility to retain a percentage of salary and cap hits in trades. Calgary Flames President Brian Burke championed this idea for years at GM meetings before it was finally adopted.

If a team trades away a player and retains salary in the transaction, that team cannot reacquire the player for one calendar year after the date of the transaction. One exception to this would be if the player’s contract expires or is otherwise terminated prior to the one calendar year date. In this case, the original team would be free to reacquire the player as the retained salary element no longer exists.

The CBA also prohibits a team from trading away a player and then reacquiring that player in a retained salary transaction within one year of the original trade.

If a contract involved in a retained salary transaction is bought out or terminated, all teams involved will be responsible for their respective percentage of obligations.

If a player acquired in a retained salary transaction is sent to the minors, the original team (the one that retained salary) must still include their portion of the contract on their salary cap for the remainder of the contract, regardless of whether the player is ever recalled or not. This prevents a team from cutting a player’s contract in half and then having the new team make the cap hit disappear by sending him to the minors.

Finally, a second retained salary transaction does not modify in any way the original terms and obligations of an initial retained salary transaction.

Real Example: Devan Dubnyk’s cross-continent travels in 2014 demonstrated a number of these provisions:

Jan 15, 2014: Dubnyk was traded from Edmonton to Nashville.
Edmonton retained 50% of his salary, or $1.75M of the $3.5M total.
March 5, 2014: Dubnyk was traded from Nashville to Montreal.
Nashville retained 25% of his salary (which applies to the original total). Therefore, the Predators retained $0.875M.
March 5, 2014: Dubnyk was immediately demoted to Montreal’s AHL affiliate in Hamilton.
After the demotion, he didn’t count against Montreal’s cap but he did still count against Edmonton’s ($1.75M) and Nashville’s ($0.875M).

I agree that Marino should be signed long term but w/ the Cap staying flat next yr too, a bridge deal could help us out a lot.

But I was also screaming to sign Marino to a 8yr Deal half way through the season last yr, lol.
      The kid is soo good.

I believe Dugan is from Pittsford, NY, not Pittsburgh, PA (though the closeness in city names somewhat explains why people think he's from Pittsburgh). He's a hardcore Yankees fan, and NYR prior to being drafted by Vegas.

No he is from Pittsburgh, PA, I watched him play when he was young here and is a Big Sid & Penguins fan. He prob is a Yankees fan bc Pittsburghs Baseball team is a minor league team, lol

Vgk doesn’t make that move. Both those guys could play for them this year and are cheap.

Have u seen Dugan play yet? You are going to absolutely LOVE the kid.

No reason for them to help both teams out with the way the flat cap is. They get crap and take salary?! nope!

They get a NHL player & a 2nd Rd Prospect for just retaining $1.75?
