How to fit under cap

Created by: KubaH
Team: 2020-21 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 19, 2020
Published: Oct. 19, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Lightning can use the LTIR salary pools to increase the salary cap.
First trade: Minnesota has a new starter in Talbot and a young goalie for the future in Kahkonen, who will be ready in no more than a year. Stalock was signed for 2 years, MacElhinney is for 1 year.
Second trade: Two long and bad deals swap. The Bruins have Pastrnak and Marchand out for the beginning of the season, so Johnson could be helpful.
Third trade: the Lightning somehow need to trade for one of Hossa/Gaborik/Dubinsky/Kesler to be able to use the salary pools.

think CBJ does this because Raddysh is better than Karlberg and Dubi is 100% insured, so why not.

yeah none of those players are signing for that.
Especially the term given those horribly low deals.

TB needs to move a lot of cap out. They are going to have to pay up to do it as the guys they want to move no one really wants.

How does this help Tampa in getting under the cap? Adding a player on the LTIR doesn't mean you can spend an additional 5M. Salarycap stays at 81.5M, but the AAV of players on the LTIR doesn't count against the cap (as long as they're on the LTIR).

Your team is still nearly 5M above the cap and your RFA's will cost more than you have. So this doesn't work at all

You essentially overpay Cernak and vastly underpay both Cirelli and Sergachev. Both are at least $1 million under what they should receive.

I think CBJ could get a bit more out of this trade. Gotta know TBL is under heavy pressure to get their young guys signed, so I’d try and leverage for maybe an additional draft pick, at least.

Though yeah, I don’t think Cirelli and Sergachev are signing for that low...

No way Serg gets just 400K less than McAvoy in a flat cap considering McAvoy is much better

You really can't increase your cap by trading for players on LTIR.
Now maybe you can be more cap compliant if the Tampa is "fortunate" enough to have a one of their own...like Stamkos, Kucherov on season ending LTIR.
Sure a player like Johnson might be useful in a trade and scenario you laid out if a team had a season ending LTIR player. But no teams wants Johnson for 5m X 4 years. One year maybe.

You need the following cap space

Sergachev 7M but he might give a 1 year break at 4.5M
Cirelli 6M but he might give a 1 year break at 4M
Cernak 4M but he might give a 1 year break at 2M

All 3 will not take these salary breaks knowing that the following year there isn’t more money for them to receive. Bridge deals are meant to be a 1-2 year discount knowing that cap space will open for a nice payday and for the player to improve and show he’s worth that $. All 3 earned the big payday and won a Stanley cup doing so. Now 1 of these guys might take the pay cut to stay but not all 3. Those trades aren’t great value given the circumstances. TJ was available for free just a week or 2 ago, teams want retentions or a payday to help. Not a “slight” better. TJ with 1M retained and a 1st is likely what gets him moved. So 4M + 2.8M in cap space locks in Serga for a handful of years. Now you need to move another 7-10M to lock the others in. Only Stamkos could do this for you while losing 1 player, the captain?!....Killorn and gourde?? Reality sinks in that either big moves need to be made or the other option is offer sheets and trading these RFAs away(not all 3).

Guys, read the LTIR FAQ on this page. You can exceed the 81,5M ceiling by the cap hit of the injured player.
