Draft and Develop and Waste

Description
In order for a Draft-and-Develop system to work, developed prospects have to see the opportunity to advance to the NHL. The Jets' scouting has been second to possibly only Tampa over the past decade. But every year, the Jets pick up a few vets to fill out their roster and block the young players from getting those opportunities. Thompson, Toninato, Sbisa, Forbort, Beaulieu and Brossoit all now "add depth" but also take away roster spots from Samberg, Heinola, Niku, Vesalainen, Harkins, Gustafson, Appleton and Berdin. Stastny's trade ensures that Roslovic will spend bottom 6 minutes again.

Samberg and Heinola will battle it out for a roster spot and Vesalainen and Niku will be given a final shot at impressing their way onto the roster. If they can't make the cut, they should be moved for future assets.

I have brought in Haula because Roslovic and Harkins deserve a quality centre to help them realize their offensive potential. As Stastny and Wheeler lose a step, Perfetti and Roslovic should be prepared to fill those top 6 spots.

Perreault would be a fantastic player on any team. Just not for $4M/season. Haula is far more effective at a lower cost. If signed for 2 years, he he could be exposed in the expansion draft.

Net results: Fantastic forwards, four very good lines. Weak defense in the short term with excellent mid to long term potential with Morrissey, Heinola, Samberg, Poink and DeMelo and Niku. Vezina caliber goaltending.

Maurice loves his vets and, youre right, some of these guys are blocking young kids from coming up.
I would say that the jets have developed a lot of their players and done it the right way. Scheifle, Ehlers, Laine, Connor, Morrisey, Bucky, Copp, Lowry, Appleton etc are all examples of this. Also, it isn't like they added D that will block Heinola or Samberg. Outside of Beaulieu, each depth guy is a one year deal at close to the league minimum.
I still want the jets to add a top 4 Dman
I like the Haula deal too.
TrueNorth liked this.

Is it just me or are all of these 1 year contracts going to cause problems when it comes to the expansion draft. Don't we need 3F, 2D and 1G exposed that have played the 40 games and under contract? I was surprised that they signed Brossoit to a 1 year deal.
