It's not as bad as you think. They are fine.

None of the guys available would have helped them. They were the best team for a large part of last year.

They added Kase and Smith.

I don't think the defense is that much worse. Chara wasn't really very good any more. I think the difference between Krug and Grzelcyk isn't that big.

They need to get bigger as a forward group, but it has to be the right player(s).

I could not disagree more. What could, or should they have done?

How does Boston suck after coming off the President's Trophy and losing only to the eventual champs in the playoffs?
If you are concerned about missing out on the big ticket free agents, then I think your fears are overblown. The top of the Atlantic (if there is an Atlantic next season) will still be Boston and Tampa (in some order).

Dadonov chose Ottawa but that wouldve been a good move. Maybe they can get Hoffman for a year. LD still needs a player. Id say trade a 2nd and prospect for Weegar, you guys have a ton of close to NHL ready prospects (Lauzon, Senyshyn etc). Then sign Hoffman for 1 year at 5-6 mill

At Least get a Krug replacement at a cheaper cost like in Edmonton... so sign Vatanen 3x 3,5M
and if they can easily trade Ritchie & Moore.. I would go after Hoffman: 6,5M 5years

They tried to sign Taylor Hall but he decided to go to hell. They're currently targeting Hoffman heavily.
They'd have to move someone though if they do get Hoffman, I assume he wants more than 6 million unless he decides to take a one year deal

Krug? The guy who let Bogosian skate right through him? tears of joy

In all seriousness, yeah that stings, but overpaying Pietro was not a championship move for Boston. Many ways to win a cup, but that would not have been it for Boston IMO.

Calling it now... "welcome to the bottom 5 in the league".. unless they add a top 6 d-man, a top 4 d-man, and at least 1 top 9 forward. This team just doesn't look that scary anymore

If they get Hoffman, I would have to assume DeBrusk is on the way out.

Gross, no thank you. They do not need more forwards who are small. They need size. Their top 9 is set and very solid. Bjork is a good young player. Smith will be 20/20 - Kase will probably be even better. I am not sure why everyone is so down on him. He was very very noticeable.

Their LD is fine for now. Weeger is decent, but if they make a move I only want them to do it for a pure top pairing guy. Lauzon is very ready. Miller should be back, Clifton is legit and Zboril is in their plans, as is Vaakainan.

I think the absolute worst thing the Bruins could do was panic and sign a player for the sake of signing someone. Hall would have been ok, but not at the expense of the salary structure and he chose money over winning, so I am not too upset about that. He wants money more than he wants his name on the Cup.

Unless I can move Debrusk or Bjork as a main piece to land a top pairing LD, I don't need Hoffman, at all. Or Dadynov.

They should be looking at Crouse, Mantha, Huberdeau, Laine if they are going to add to their forward group.

They did, Grzelcyk. He is very good offensively. Was always behind Krug and still put up decent offensive numbers in limited time and opportunity.

Neat fact: Grzelcyk had 38pts at BU while McAvoy's high pt total was 26. (he played two more years...)

The price to get the forwards you mentioned except Crouse would cripple the Bruins.

The Bruins do not suck.

The most spoiled fan base in the universe has to be the Boston sports fan and all they do is whine like children.

you know they essentially lost Krug and that is it, right?

They added Kase and Smith - both very solid. Chara is like 108 , love the dude, but he hurts them or the way they want to play more often than not. Their top 9 is as deep as any in the league.

Their D is the question, but Lauzon is legit. I have to assume they feel the same about Zboril, and we know they do about Vaakanianan. It could be a mess, but it also could be a lot better than people think.
Miller is better than people like to give him credit for too. Having him back will be huge.

I also think Ritchie, Lauko and Studnicka are also in the mix for the top 9 if any of them (bjork) struggle.

idk if i necessarily agree with that. Bergeron, Marchand, Pasta, McAvoy, and Rask are still gonna carry this team into the playoffs. Past TBL, theres not a clear favorite in the atlantic id pick over them. Theyd probably go even with TOR and I cant see them falling behind anyone else other than MAYBE the Sabres with Hall and Eichel needing monster seasons to make that happen

That doesn't make sense to me really, but I agree. Hoffman doesn't make sense to me... They can't get a good enough defensive return for Debrusk.

Weeger doesn't really move the needle for me. He is fine, but they have a bunch of guys who I think are the same thing. They need a true # LD

As a Bruins fan, I agree. If Sweeney had or does sign Hoffman we will be talking about him like Backes in a year because Cassidy won't play him because he can't play D which means he can't score.

There wasn't really anyone available who helps them via FA.

You can also keep your powder dry for the trade deadline.

Plenty of RFAs still unsigned, teams havent dumped their players yet (think tampa, arizona etc).

also, you won the presidents trophy and return much of your team.

I agree for the most part, however if I am Detroit Debrusk, Studnicka and a 1st might get the conversation going. Mantha isn't young young. Detroit is still at least 3 years away. Mantha would be approaching 30... those big bodies don't always hold up that long...

He isn’t overly physical so I’m not too worried about falling off a cliff like Lucic. I was under the impression Studnicka was untouchable for the most part and I think that’d cripple Boston as Bergeron and Krejci age. The offer is definitely something to consider.

Marchand and Pastrnak are out for the start of the season. In a shortened season, good luck catching up. They didn't add any significant pieces. Smith is a third liner. Kase from last season is nothing special. They needed a d-man and they didn't get anyone. Lauzon isn't a top 4 right now. Krug was a huge loss and they're full of question marks every where else. They don't look like a playoff team at all
