It is hard to say NYR didn't win this trade flat out, Fox looked like a legit top 4 d-man as a rookie
(and giving up 2 seconds for him was a win, COL paid 2 seconds for D.Toews, personally I like Fox better)

With that aside:

The return on Fox alone was pretty great for a guy that wouldn't sign with us,
But actually seeing the pieces it turned into, is kind of phenominal.

Carolina has had one of the best overall drafts 2 years running, and now is top 5 deepest prospect pools hands down.
And this trade was legitamately a huge part of that.

(and yes, they're just prospects, and maybe all 3 flop at the NHL level)

But this is pretty nice now that we can see what we actually got for Fox.

Rangers 100%. Unfortunately canes lost when they drafted fox, no fault of their own.

Exactly this, it’s too early to know what the canes actually have. All 3 are great prospects but they are jsut prospects. It’s more than likely that Fox is the best player in the deal

Fox was part of the Hamilton deal they did not draft him. Unfortunately it wouldn’t have mattered what team that drafted fox, he was only going to play for the rangers. Whether players should be allowed to do this so easily is another conversation

Tough to say. I think Rangers got the best player but considering Fox wouldn’t have signed no matter what they got tremendous value for him...

You make a lot of good points!

What I will say though is that in reality you value the picks before picking players. You can't bash whoever traded a 5th rounder to Ottawa when they picked Mark Stone or whatever the case was, because if everyone knew what Mark Stone was, he wouldn't be there in the 5th round. And for this case in particular, the trade was made way ahead of not only the draft order, but an entire season of prospecs playing, what the other teams did in the draft, how good both Carolina and NYR were going to be in the standing etc.

But with that said - we also didn't know Fox was going to look this good. We knew he wasn't going to sign in Carolina, so any return is somewhat positive. And the expected value of those picks might not be great, but Carolina seemingly drafts well, and in hindsight it looks like a good return, giving the scenario and what we knew then.

Rangers right now, but Carolina did well considering he was never gonna sign there. Now the Brady Skjei trade on the other hand...

Fox for 2 2nds was great for NYR and also for CAR considering their drafting the last 2+ years!!
Canes are stock full of nice forward prospects with a few nice d prospects. I'd say deepest pool in the league!
Jerks only to get jerkier for the next 6yrs?!?!! Me no like...

Since Fox wasn't going to sign with Canes, they absolutely won this.
