Need space - need moves

Description
This could potentially help all teams trading with Habs to get players they need;
Habs get the cap space, and while trading Danault they still bring in two QC players which has been a talkative point over here and both have experience and points options for Habs. Brassard brings in speed and hands, Duclair bring in a sniper we need.
Habs still get 16M$ in cap space next year to sign back the RFAs, and sign back UFAs they still need.

I figure that Tatar could stay on if he's put in that 2nd pairing; Armia and Weal would go since we have young players ready to jump in Evans, and probably Poehling if he decides to train hard.

Highly, highly, highly doubt Detroit trades a potential top 3 pick next year for danault. And the league got rid of if a player is “re signing” for a pick.

Yzerman on record, he is not trading picks for older players. So no

So let me understand this, you’re saying that the first round pick is conditional upon him signing (which is against the current CBA) otherwise Gagner for Danault as a base? I’m fine with that from Detroit given the first round pick isn’t in play and even if it was in play (with the disallowed condition) I’d just trade him so I’m not sure how this benefits Montreal with the exception of freeing up cap space. It would probably make sense to just remove that pick from the ACGM if I’m understanding your logic correct.

That's a hard pass from Detroit. The 2021 first is very likely to be top 5 again. Danault is a good 2C sure, but adding a 4th and two lesser prospects is not worth a top 5 pick. Considering that Danault isn't going to be happy with playing 3C, that would decrease his value even more.
Also FYI, the oldest core player Detroit is building around is Mantha, who is 26. Danault is 27. Detroit's average player age is high because of depth players over 30 years old (Nielsen, Helm, Filppula, Biega, new additions Staal and Ryan, etc.) Detroit is not an old team anymore, they don't need to get younger.

On a different note, I think it would be a terrible move to trade Danault right now anyways. KK and Suzuki are 20 and 21, respectively. They're almost guaranteed to have growing pains in the near future, and keeping them in the Top 6 while having those struggles will hurt their development and confidence. Keep Danault, move him up to the Top 6, and let whoever is struggling play against lesser players to work through the struggles. If KK and Suzuki can make it to the deadline with minimal issues, then trade Danault at the deadline for a premium.
