Description
*Assuming Johnson is willing to go to Ottawa*
Logic behind the trade: Ottawa adds another top 6 veteran who will help out with the young core. They take on 80% of the contract, or 4 years @$4M per year. The highest they pay in actual money is $4.4M in year 2, and the rest is always under $4M. They also acquire a young prospect in Foote instead of taking a pick from Tampa, and I will explain why.
From Tampa's POV, sending their 2021 1st leaves them without a pick until round 3 that year. Sending the 2022 pick may not be something they want to do either. There is also the expansion draft to take into account. As it stands, Tampa would have to protect Hedman, Sergachev, Cernak and McDonagh on defense. Foote also needs to be protected, but they would probably protect the other 4 before him, since he is unproven. Ottawa could protect him in the expansion draft, since the only big name that needs protecting on defense is Chabot. Also, many people thought Ottawa needed a RHD and should have went for Drysdale instead of Sanderson. Foote is a RHD, which essentially fills that hole on prospect RHD. Tampa gets rid of $4M in cap, and even retaining $1M is much better than potentially buying him out.

Take out the retention and maybe, but I doubt Tampa wants to part with Foote. Really good chance he’s on their roster this year

I feel like Ottawa, or any other team, might not be ready to take on that whole $5M. On the other hand, I get that they might want Foote to play, but odds are they would lose him, or another top dman at the expansion draft. They would then have to pay Seattle not to take any of them. I think Tampa goes 4 and 4, and protects Stamkos, Kucherov, Point and Cirelli on offense and Hedman, Sergachev, McDonagh and Cernak on defense. Its either you give Ottawa a first now and then probably lose Foote or someone like Palat/Killorn at the expansion draft, or lose Foote now and probably lose Palat/Killorn at expansion.

At this point, I think Tampa should be willing to gamble on leaving McDonagh exposed. He's still a good player, but he'll be 32, and on that contract there's a good chance he goes unclaimed imo.

Foote is likely the last prospect GMJBB would give up. Probably would not give him up under any circumstance. He's likely not going to top out where Sergachev is already at, but he should still be someone we need to, and have been expecting to, rely on the right side for awhile now.

McDonagh will also not be protected, and I think it is likely Foote only see's limited time in the NHL this season depending on what the value RHD free agency market looks once our RFA situation is cleared up.

Nothing a little sweetener cannot fix (assuming McDonagh continues to be a solid force defensively this coming season). Getting his goal count close to 10 again would help too. Still, Seattle will need at least 2 guys to lean on the blueline. I suppose a lot could depend on who else is exposed around the league. I don't imagine anyone will be leaving hidden gems for them like Vegas was able to get.

Ottawa doesn't have a hole in the prospect pool for RHD. They used their first round pick in 2018 on Jacob Bernard-Docker and their first round pick in 2019 on Lassi Thomson. They also have Erik Brannstrom who prefers to play the right side. Yes their current roster is very weak on the right side with Zaitsev, Gudbranson, Brown, but these guys are just placeholders until those 3 prospects I mentioned are ready for full-time NHL roles.

The trade is decent value though. The only thing that I don't like is the term on Johnson when Ottawa would only really need a guy like him for the short term. So I don't know if it's worth it to take that on for a prospect they don't really need. Cal Foote is good but I don't think he would even be in the Sens top 10 prospects. The value is decent but I would decline on the Sens side.

Zero chance of Tyler Johnson leaving a cup winning team for Ottawa, He'll go to a contending team if Julien Brisebois has to retain 50% on him.

Fair enough! You guys think, however, that Tampa may still protect Foote alongside Hedman, Sergachev and Cernak and leave Palat, Killorn, Gourde exposed?

No I know they do not have a whole, they just have more LHD as is. Brannstrom is playing the right at the moment, but I see him playing the left side if he was to make the team this season. I get that the trade is not the most ideal thing for Ottawa in terms of contract length, but from Tampa's POV, not many teams would be able to take on Johnson at even 80% of his contract.

Hard to see him retaining 50%... $2.5M in dead money for a team like Tampa for 4 years is not the move I do not think.

Foote has to play 40 games this season to be eligible to be selected by Seattle. Which is why I expect the Lightning will prefer to only give him a taste of the NHL this year and then bring him in full-time next season after he's had 2 full AHL seasons and a mixed AHL/NHL year under his belt. Likely slot him in as a full-time partner for Hedman since Cernak usually plays with Sergachev or McDonagh.

If I am guessing the Lightning's protections assuming Killorn and Johnson are already gone:
- Forwards: Stamkos, Kucherov, Point, Cirelli, Palat, Coleman, Goodrow
- Defense: Hedman, Sergachev, Cernak
- Goalie: McElhinney scream (just kidding)

The goal for the expansion draft has to be to move Gourde or McDonagh, preferably the latter. Even though McDonagh would be solid for Seattle, age and term being a factor though, I would imagine there would be conversations beforehand and compensation heading towards Seattle to make sure the right outcome occurs.
