Toews to CGY is a better idea than people seem to think

Swing and a miss. Why would a rebuilding team want rittich or backlund?

I would love it personally, he is just a pure upgrade on Backlund. I just don't think there is any way Chicago is retaining 3M and Lucic would almost have to be going the other way. Maybe it makes more sense in a year from now after the expansion draft

Mostly cap reasons, Backlund would still be able to shelter Dach well without completely blocking him. Competitors usually just don't have 10.5M cap space to work with.

Hence the 3mil retention. Why would they retain 3 mil AND take on Calgary's cap dumps?
Not saying backlund is bad but a rebuilding hawks team has no use for his and rittichs cap hit unless it means the hawks getting a better return to do so.

As I said in the first half, I don't see any scenario where Hawks retain 3M. It's more likely they take back both Backlund and Lucic + a bunch of futures instead

It'd have to be pretty damn good futures if they're taking lucic

Maybe Toews @ 7.5M for (a metric ton of futures) + Lucic

I feel like Backlund would be of more interest to Chicago than Lucic. Backs can at least shelter Dach a little.

Yeah but the beauty of Lucic is that we can demand an absolute insane return haha

Never thought I'd be happy Lucic had a gull NMC but thank you

Ill see if I can come up with a decent deal at 7.5M, however I don't think it would happen this year with the upcoming expansion also factoring in

I mean I don't want the Hawks to trade Kane and Toews. But I wouldn't expect an insane return for Toews.

Kane, that's a different story.

Agreed on Kane, I could also see Keith waiving to Florida to reunite with Q. He would also make a great fit there as Ekblads partner, especially with the little money he is actually owed

I just hate to have to trade any of them because he means more to us than what teams would offer in value and it would be nice to see him retire here.

Not really, Lucic's cap hit is high, but actual dollars owed is only $10m which is not much more than he is worth on the ice at this point in time and if the Hawks are rebuilding, they probably don't want to be spending to the cap anyways, so the cap being higher than the dollars wouldn't have much of an impact.

I can't see CHI retaining that much money but, if that's what it takes, I'd do it...

The point is that Calgary would be getting rid of Lucic and replacing him with Toews... and only adding like 1.5M because of retention. Actual dollars don't matter when you need cap space. The Hawks taking Lucic would be us doing a favor for Calgary.

Actual dollars do matter when dumping contracts though and I'm not sure the Hawks talking Lucic would be helping Calgary if sodomy is the end result.

It's all moot anyways because the Flames aren't going to ask him to waive his NMC to go to a rebuilding team; I'm pretty when the Lucic trade went down they reached an agreement that Looch waives for the expansion draft but won't be asked to waive otherwise. I'm just tired of people claiming that dumping 10m in Looch would cost a fortune, it wouldn't be cheap, but it shouldn't be any more than Carolina got for taking Marleau knowing he'd never play a game for them.

Any Flames/Hawks scenario needs a 3rd team with Backlund going to the 3rd team.
