In this market, you're not dumping Boychuk without giving up a 1st. Hickey probably costs two seconds.

Strome can't play wing, so no point for the islanders

You're welcome to keep him.

Teams were asking Vegas for a 1st and a 2nd for MAF at 50% retention ($3.5M). Two seconds for Hickey doesn't seem so unreasonable.

It would be better to bury him in the minors than pay 2 seconds

That's likely what the Isles will have to do then, as cap dumps are going for a premium right now.

Burying Hickey gives teams a cap hit of less than 1.5M. What team this offseason has charged 2 2nds for a 1.5M player?

What teams have taken on two years of $2.5M cap dumps in this market for less than that?

Nate Schmidt for a 3rd, Stall bigger cap hit same money as the 2 years was with a 2nd, the brutal Matheson contract got back Honquvist, Joshua brown 2yrs same cap hit when Hickey is buried went for a 4th, Olli Matta went for an AHLer, Markus Nutivarra same cap hit not burned for same amount of years went for an AHLer, Erik Gubranson went for a 5th, Ryan Murray went for a 5th. No one went with 2 2nds, no one.

But all of the guys you mentioned are actually still good players, they're just on bad contracts. Thomas Hickey isn't a NHL caliber player anymore. No one would trade anything of value for him if he were on a league-minimum contract.

For sure, but it doesn't cost 2 2nds to move a guy who is going to cost a team 1.5M, if buried, per in cap the next two years and can be a solid vet to bring up if injuries occur. He has playoff experience, has scored big goals in juniors and pros. I just can't see someone wanting more for him than Stall who is just as bad, maybe worse. I think Hickey and a 3rd + a B prospect does it imo

I don't agree about Staal at all. He's still a decent bottom pairing defenseman with significant leadership experience, serving as the Rags assistant captain for a long time. He has over 100 playoff games under his belt, compared to Hickey's 24. Finally, and most importantly, Staal only has one year remaining on his deal compared to Hickey's two. An extra 2nd for the 2nd year seems just about right. You can swap out a B/B+ prospect for the second 2nd if you want.
