"Hope springs eternal" in the minds of a certain significant segment of Leafs Nation. But where are Dermott and the 2022 fourth?

Smart choice. The production that you'll get out of Engvall, Malgin, Marincin and Holl is irreplaceable.

Totally incorrect. Weegar would be a huge add for this team. The way I see it there are two problems with adding him. 1 is acquisition cost, because obviously it takes more than this to get him. If you have to include Kerfoot in the deal (and maybe you wouldn't) that makes it dicey, as he's going to be a big part of our middle 6 going forward. They won't want Justin Holl because they have enough D men right now, so you'd have to make another move to send Holl (or somebody else, likely Dermott) somewhere else, which adds layers of complication. But if you have to give up a 2021 first rounder for Weegar, do you want to do that knowing how important ELC and cheap contributors will be to this team going forward.

2 is the salary cap this year and going forward. You might be able to find space for what Weegar wants this year, but what then. If you tie up some money in him over a longer-term, you're now going to struggle to resign Morgan Rielly in 2 years (and Hyman next year). The Leafs have very fixed costs for the next 4-5 years and need to be sure that whoever they add is going to fit in that fixed cost structure. If you add Brodie and Weegar this offseason, you risk losing out on Rielly and Hyman. Not sure if that makes our team better overall. And if you're only going to have Weegar for two years, you have to be careful how much you give up to get him.

Weegar has been compared to a younger Radko Gudas. Something they don't need. He provides physicality and some defence but no offence. For the contract he's gonna want, I'll take Bogosian for only $1M

Another bald statement belied by facts. Weegar averaged more points per game last season (18 its in 45 games) than Jonas Brodin (19 in 64), Justin Holl (18 in 68), Travis Dermott (11 in 56) or Zach Bogosian, playing on a far more offensively-challenged team than the Leafs. Playing as Rielly's partner, he would almost certainly be second in scoring on Toronto's defense this season.

Why lose 2 NHL roster players and 2 depth players for a #4 d-man. He wouldn't make THAT much of a difference in the lineup. Their defence is already set. They don't need him or need to waste assets to get him

If i can get weegar using like Holl and a pick or with engvall I'm taking it. He brings so much to the table

& then you lose him after 1 season to the expansion draft... yeah that sounds like smart asset management 🙄

Fun fact, leafs can always go 4-4-1. Protect
Matthews
MArner
Tavares
Nylander

Brodie
Muzzin
Rielly
Weegar

Campbell.

Big names are Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Hyman and Dermott. Odds are they take like Hyman or Kerfoot

So lose a more important piece in Hyman or Kerfoot, plus what you give up to get Weegar? Still incredibly dumb. Weegar would be the 4th best d-man in Toronto. Hyman and Kerfoot are more valuable and useful to the Leafs. Don't make irrational moves just cause the media says they need a right handed d-man.. Dubas clearly doesn't care

Hyman is a UFA, you expose him and they may leave him, and even if they do take him they may not sign him. Kerfoot is fine to move because they'll need cap flexibility again. Can't keep everyone. And if not, you can let them go for weegar because sandin and Liljegren exist

Hyman more than likely re-signs in Toronto. He's too big of a piece to lose. Kerfoot is not fine to move for cap flexibility and hasn't been because Toronto lacks centre depth and moving him makes them way too vulnerable. Unless a replacement is brought in, he stays
