Description
I do not take any of Eklund's rumors seriously (I still like the Hockeybuzz site for some of the other team writers), but this is one of his latest and I only post it because I'd love for it to happen for the Canucks.

The rumor is basically Loui being dangled with next year's 1st to every team in the league, with the goal being to clear enough space to sign Hoffman for one year, who's waiting for the Canucks to get some cap cleared. Personally I think Benning will need to add another sweetener in the trade to get it done (Virtanen?).

But we need another defenseman, not a winger. Myers is not a good fit with Hughes.

Both Myers and Hughes actually had pretty good possession stats when playing as a pair last year, and Myers is probably better utilized with more OZ starts as he's not a real shutdown Dman. And ideally the team would get another Dman and top 6 forward, but there just isn't cap room for both. IMO the bigger need is a top 6 winger after they acquired Schmidt.

Myers' decision making is not good enough to play with Hughes. Just because Myers is better at offense than defense doesn't mean he'll be a fit with him. He makes too many mistakes and when Hughes is making plays, they'll get caught too often. That means they'll either be bad defensively or Hughes will have to be restricted to cover Myers' mistakes.

I disagree about needing a top-6 winger more than a defenseman. It would be nice, but we have essentially the same forward core as last year. Toffoli was only here for 10 games, so he wasn't really part of the team. Demoting Eriksson and inserting MacEwan full time is an upgrade already. Re-sign Leivo as a stop gap forward and the forward core is improved from last year without any big moves. That leaves the limited resources we have left to be allocated to getting a defenseman.
