Maybe not too realistic with cap but definitely a competitive team

Created by: God8069
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 19, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trades - Dunn
Might be too little for Dunn, and may not even move him, but if Pilut agrees to play for St Louis, I would be interested from the blues side. If Steen doesn't stay on IR, going to need cap room, and already being below the cap with a decent size cap hit from Dunn may be hard to give, Thompson cheap young forward with potential signed for a couple years, plus Pilut could be a cheap but very effective defenseman.

Raanta - Arizona also needs to shed cap, I saw Arizona fans saying Raanta for a 7th and Hutton? This is more but I don't hm the actual price would be, think Hutton could actually really strive in Arizona's defensive system and put up similar backup numbers to his St Louis / Nashville days.

Montour - Sabres add new defenseman, clear the old. Montour could be a great defenseman on the right team and right system, think Montreal would steal him here for a 2nd.

McCabe - Analytically good, eye test has always looked bad outside first 10 games. Rangers could definitely use him and could see the intrigue for only a 3rd. Also it eliminates the possibility of McCabe - Risto D pairing which is a huge win for Sabres.

Lineup decisions - Hall not with Eichel. Think they play too much alike, both like the puck and want to take center ice, both like to control the game. I think they'd still be great together, but feel Hall helps the 2nd line so much. I also think Skinner and Staal should be on different lines both score goals in similar ways, both around the net banging home pucks. Olofsson is definitely an outside shooter, and think putting him back on his off wing will help him develop 5 on 5, especially with Hall and Staal. Also Skinner needs to bounce back, and think best chance is going with what worked for him, Jack and Sam, don't think either of those two would complain about that either.
Powerplay was confusing, think Staal has to be PP1. So good at banging pucks in from the front of the net, plus good on faceoffs, works well. Hall/Olofsson on their offwing, my guess would be hall since he has to play with Jack somewhere. Perfect opportunity for Olofsson to show he isn't just a product of Jack and the #1 powerplay.

Additional Details:
Top 10 protected first goes to 2022, many blues fans may not know who Pilut is, but he is probably right now close to a top 4 defenseman miss used by Jason Boterill. All sabres fans lost their mind when he signed in Russia. Idk ab Tage but cheap contract and could be a legit talent on a good team, especially maybe back where he was drafted.

Rangers say no.

Your cap is fine because most of the bonuses won’t actually be paid out

More that $500K will be. And this is with a roster that’s missing 3 people. So the cap situation isn’t fine.

Yes, just what we need, to pay a 2nd for a 3rd pairing defenseman.

While the Blues like the first, they have absolutely no interest in yet another bottom 6 forward with only middle 6 potential.

500K is nothing... shows over 4M in bonuses. The 500k is for showing up to games basically. He’s got 20 guys on the roster which you’re allowed to do.. not ideal but can be done

I’m saying that they’ll get over an eighth of those $4 million bonuses, putting them over the cap. And no, you can’t run with 20 players, because your 1 injury away from going over the cap. Not to mention the fact that it will be harder to call up players with the COVID restrictions.

Bonuses can be carried over to the following year..

First of all I completely agree Hall should not be on the same line with Eichel.
Hard to believe but Hall is more of a playmaker than Jack.
For example 61.3% of his pts are assists, in contrast Jack who is known playmaker only 59.3% of his points are assists.

Second, I did not know Botterill was the head coach.
Krueger misused Pilut.
He also misused Montour, Miller, Vesey, Sheary, Rodrigues, Okposo, Hutton and Skinner as they all had career worse years.
I could accept players being used in a different fashion if the results were better.
The team did more poorly than the previous year.
