Proposed Lines Updated with Strome Traded

Created by: Alankrz
Team: 2020-21 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 21, 2020
Published: Oct. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Based on feedback from my last post there was some consensus that Strome should be traded. Trades with TBL seemed good on the surface, but acquiring Sergechev exasperates an existing log jam on the Hawks D and Tyler Johnson's contract of 5 more years is too long for the Hawks based on what Stan Bowman said on today's Blackhawks Talk podcast. If Backes approves a trade to Chicago, the Hawks are in a position to provide the Ducks with needed cap relief. Backes' contract is only one more year. Backes will probably be in and out of the lineup so a roster spot remains available for a younger developing player on the Hawks. The Ducks should get about $2 million of cap relief based on what Strome should sign for. Finally, if Backes and Seabrook are healthy scratches for the same game it would be epic to see them socially distance in the press box. The Hawks 2nd powerplay unit really takes a big hit by not keeping Strome. Lets hear what ya'all think!

This is way off. Strome is probably worth a late 1st. Backes only makes the price steeper.

Are you a Hawks fan or Ducks fan? I don't know a lot of examples of what the return is on RFA rights being traded, but a few years back when the Hawks traded the RFA rights to Andrew Shaw we got a high 2nd round pick in return. That trade was made at the draft when picks have more immediate value so maybe a 1st rounder makes sense. Thanks for commenting.

Strome gets at minimum a 1st, he’s a solid 2C with room to grow

Leafs fan, completely impartial here. You are taking back a bad contract and getting a 3rd and 5th for a 23 year old 50 point centre. This is a bad trade for the hawks. Just taking on Backes is worth more than a 3rd and 5th.

Rfa rights are worth the same as a player with term. Unless they are having contract issues.

Do ya think DK would prank Backes with wakeup calls at hotels on road trips? hahah. If it happened I think the media would have a lot of fun with it.

Thanks. We're on the same page with Backes being a bad contract, but it would be off our books after one year. It's good to know that the return on Strome could be pretty high in a trade. All the more reason to trade him if he wont take a team friendly bridge deal.

Are you a Ducks fan? If so, do Ducks fans want to dump the Backes contract or is it no big deal? I know the Loui Erikson contract in Vancouver is terrible and the Backes contract looked bad when the Bruins signed him, but I'm not sure how Ducks fans feel about it. I don't even know how the Ducks acquired Backes. It just looked like the Ducks need a cap dump trade and the Hawks want to acquire picks and prospects.

Some folks have hypothesized that Stan Bowman is trying to shake things up to make the Hawks core more willing to waive their NMC's. This trade feeds right into those theories, don't ya think? I don't believe those theories are true, but they are documented on social media. Backes is scratched a lot of games. The Hawks could acquire Backes and then assign him to Rockford, in which case he probably wouldn't report and the contract would be terminated. There are a lot of angles here.

Strome is worth more then a late first Nick. He's with a first a very good prospect as csick said. Since joining the Hawks in the last 2 seasons, Strome has been a .76ppg player, is 23 and has plenty of upside left before peaking. Asking for only a late first that has a 30% of even becoming a NHL player much less anywhere near Strome would be stupidity.

Whatever you say, I'm not here to argue with you because we don't evaluate players nearly the same.

Simple math and deductive reasoning Nick instead of blowing it off.

Late 1st round draft picks have a 30% chance of ever becoming a fulltime NHL player....that's a fact and well documented.

Strome has been a .76ppg player since joining the Hawks; another fact.

Strome is 23 year old RFA, another fact.

Simply math here doesn't add up.

Give me $5 and I'll give you a 30% of getting $2.50 back and about a 10% of getting $5 back and 5% chance of getting $7.50 back. Makes no sense

Simple math, he played with DeBrincat, then he played with Kane, he's not a great skater, he's not a great defender, he's a a poor face-off guy, he also can't play wing. That's going to hinder value, can't play wing, can't win 49%+ of face-offs? Yikes. Teams that are contending need 200 foot players. He is not one of them. There is zero intensity in his game. Also you're insinuating that he's worth more just because he's a full-time NHLer. At that point, why doesn't every team trade their middle 6 forwards for 1sts?!

His FO% was 47.7 this season which isn't poor, plenty of centers post around 48%. The rest I won't argue, however, you are ignoring his IQ is off the charts, he creates plays and sees the ice well, his passing is extremely good and he has incredible hands. He's an offensive zone center, plenty of teams have them.

Now, I am no Strome fan and I'm sure you've paid attention I've talked about trading him for the last year, but there is not a chance in hell the Hawks should only get a late 1st for him; again, only a 30% chance of becoming a fulltime NHL player let alone a guy who can put up .76ppg at the ages of 21 and 22 regardless if he had a good linemate or not.

Make this relevant, here's his draft class. Take a look at the bottom 10 picks in his class. Out of those 10, you can maybe argue 2 of them are better then Strome at this point. Now what is the chance you happen to draft 1 of those 2 players knowing it's a gamble? Pretty low odds.

I don't think Anaheim gives up a 1st. They are not a top contender where Strome is the missing piece to put them over the edge. They are in somewhat of a rebuild mode themselves and probably value their 1st rounder. Based on this past season, the odds are it will be a high 1st rounder. But the arguments that Strome is worth a 1st++ are valid so this trade probably wont happen. Hawks will probably sign Strome to a contract that expires in 2023, the same year as Kane, Toews, Debrincat, and Keith. Maybe with so many players in a contract year going into the 2023 offseason the Hawks will have more to play for in the 2022-23 season. Contract years are motivators. The Seattle expansion draft will also play out by then and there's probably an angle to consider there.
