While I would like to have two seasoned, very skilled vets who have won cups on this team, they are taking on more cap and losing out on two young players with tremendous upside. For that reason, I think the Leafs say no.

Bettman says no and checks Kyle Dubas into a facility citing he is incapable of making decisions for himself at this time

2-3 years of prime Kane + 3 years of an already slightly declining Toews, for 6 years of prime Marner and 5 years of prime Nylander? not even close.

That makes no sense, you save cap and get younger but it destroys your cap structure?

Yeah but when our young players go to ask for new contracts and Marner is making 11M, how are we supposed to tell them that they can't make that sort of money.

How does Marner's contract now make that a problem when the kids could easily ask for Kane/Toews money?

That's not the point. Because by the time their ELCs are done, who knows who will be better. Also even if they say that and Marner is better, they still are going to have to inflate their salaries because of that deal in proportion to what they would offer now.

Discounts only work when everyone is taking one.

Like I said, the value is too much coming to Chicago, no problems with that. Just don't think it helps us unless Toronto retains on that Marner deal and obviously me even bringing that up is an insult

Kane and Toews have 1 Hart, 1 Art Ross, 1 Lindsay, 1 Selke, 2 Conn Smythes, 3 Cups and a combined 26 years of experience. They also bring in a lot of money via their name/repuation outside of their ability to play hockey at a high level.

If the kids ask for that kind of money, all the Hawks have to do is explain that to them.

But when Marner is their age (more or less) and is making 11M, it inflates salaries

First off, the kids aren't dumb, they are very well aware that their own GM did not hand out Marner's contract. How many of the Hawks young players were 90 point producers before getting their first non-ELC contract?

They also don't have a leg to stand on being RFAs. If they desperately want that kind of money, sign an offer sheet (if available) and force your GM to make a choice.

Lastly, Marner's contract isn't inflating anyone's salary, McDavid did that when Edmonton offered him the moon and stars.

Ok well we can disagree but I see long term cap issues from getting Marner and I don't think it's a good move for the team

its also not a player on the team that they can compare to, if dach sees hughes or kakko get something he will probbaly compare to them if he puts up similar production, its players around the league too not just team

I mean not really because every team has their own salary structure to some degree. Look at Boston, Tampa for example

Marner's cap is a few hundred k more than Kane. How does that destroy your cap structure? Most likely Marner will be the better player in the next 5 years. While Kane most certainly has been better the last 5 years (I feel like he has a Hart or at least a couple Hart nominations), Marner will be 23 at the start of next season and Kane will be 32. There is a good chance Marner will be as good as Kane next year simply for aging reasons...

Edited to add:

Sorry saw your later posts afterwards. I don't agree with your argument (you can simply say no that was signed by a different gm, different cap, different situation, etc). But I see your argument

Anyone can compare themselves to anyone. On their team or not. How succesful that is in negotiations is up to the two sides.

But other teams certainly have a say as they can sign elsewhere as an rfa or go to arbitration if eligible.

I mean I get it and I am not trying to insult the Leafs by criticizing the value. I guess maybe if we had Sakic or Yzerman negotiating deals I'd have more faith than I do in Stan Bowman.
