Good deal and he'll still be an RFA by the end of it

Solid number.. Now heres to hoping they dont use a buyout! More dead money on next years cap would be a mistake.

Surprised given all of the drama that happened between him and the team before the return. But he's a solid player.

The team got a 500k rebate in exchange for more term.

It tells me Virtanen doesn't want to cash more now by going to arbitration and bet on himself for next season.

Doesn’t look good. By you know, covid-19...

Question...how is he still an RFA at the end of this? He would have accrued 7 seasons which would make him a UFA? I feel like I am missing something here...

It's his age, no? Assuming that by 21/22 we're back to a regular offseason schedule, he's still going to be 25 when free agency starts July 1st 2022.

16-17 didn't count as an accrued season.

That's what I was thinking and now it makes sense, I was wondering why there wasn't 2 separate entry-level slides when you look at his contract history but it's because there was one in 14-15, he played 15-16 and then only played up to the 10 game limit in 16-17...so his second full year isn't a slide. If that makes sense lol?

Yup, that's right. Once you play 10+ games in a season, you lose all future slide eligibility for future years

There'll be a bunch more moves in the Pacific, nearly all the teams are at / over the cap.

ARI: $2.77M over cap with 22 players signed (they can use Hossa's $5.2M LTIR money)
VAN: $1.5M over cap with 23 players signed
VGK: $1M over cap with 21 players signed
ANA: $900k over cap with 22 players signed (Kesler likely on LTIR)
EDM: $700k under cap with 22 players signed (Klefbom likely on LTIR)
CGY: $2.6M under cap with 19 players signed
SJS: $2.3M under cap with 23 players signed
LAK: $13.6M under cap with 19 players signed

Pretty sure ARI's ownership will be looking to move money out, and VAN, VGK and CGY need to make moves in order to become cap compliant. EDM is tight but it's doable if Klefbom is out for the season, same with Anaheim and Kesler.

I like this signing. Now we can stop with the Virtanen trades.

I like the deal, like the player- despite the fact his play can be infuriating at times. He takes too many stupid penalties , can get lazy in his own end, but both fixable. Hes one of the fastest players, yet apparently he isnt always in top shape! He can hit hard, but rarely does it, so much potential, yet he doesnt seem to take it very serious or apply himself. With the talent around him, if he did- he could get 30 goals easily. he just has to want it more.

They have another window after this signing as Jake had filed for arbitration.

He didn't go to arbitration though, he signed before the hearing. My understanding of the CBA is that the second window only opens if the arbiter awards a contract. Maybe our hosts could confirm? @Banks @CapFriendly

The rule is listed in the buyout faq. Doesnt matter that he didnt go to hearing. All teams who have an arbitration filing get this secondary window once the case is settled. The team can buyout any rostered player who is over 4M this year in that window. Sutter is the only one who gives the team any real relief.
