Is any GM going to be comfortable with such little flexibility? Maybe a team would take a chance on Baertschi at 50% retained? Or maybe Sutter 50% retained?

I think the flexibility will come from injuries. Unfortunate, but I think the odds that Ferland isn't on LTIR are probably low. If it is a shortened season, chances are pretty good Sutter/Beagle will be on IR for some of the time.

But it's all due to Benning's bad contracts.

Regarding Ferland on LTIR, I think that he will do this if the team asks, provided that they agree to reactivate him upon first injury and having the room.

Benning has signed some terrible contracts in the past, but they’re expiring within one to two years so... then there’s the extensions for EP40 and QH43

I read something from his agent that he can't keep trying to come back and failing. I think if he has one more concussion related issue, I think he will be on LTIR permanently or retire.
