Still having 4 forward making over half the cap was never a good idea
imo that doesn't matter, if they're good
for all the crap tavares gets, he's had 73 goals since 18/19 at $11M AAV, while JVR, Bozak, Komarov, Kadri and Martin have had a combined 112 for $22M.
In that scenario, the leafs would have 63% their cap tied up in matthews, jvr, kadri, bozak, komarov, marner, willy, and martin and they'd only have an extra 39 goals over two seasons, and they'd be spending $11M more.
We can get a player who can score 20 goals per season for WAY less than $11M aav, such as Jimmy Vesey for $900K or a couple guys like Spezza/Anderson/Barabanov for under a mil.
So we match or even exceed the production on cheap bargain bin guys, and still have $8.475M to spare
Plus, every single one of those guys we let go (except Kadri) have become anchors and cap dumps, whereby Tavares at $11M is our captain and our #2 elite matchup centre who pots 35-40 every year across 82 games.
tl;dr tavares is good because math and goals
