Because he's not good enough defensively to be part of a shutdown line, not physical enough to be in a grindy forchecking line, and doesn't think the game well enough to be a solid, consistent offensive contributor.

Basically, imo, Virtanen has a year to convince people he can be a reliable triggerman on the Petey/Miller line. If not I'd say trade him. Since this trade gives the Canucks a RH D, RW prospect, and LD prospect I say thank you, and do you want me to dial Jim Benning's phone number for you?

Only caveat is Jensen being signed for two more seasons after this. Any chance WSH wants to retain a tiny bit of salary?

VAN is not moving Virtanen

I like this team. Cheap but good 3rd pair D. Virtanen looks like Connolly on paper, could play really nice here on the third line. I'd probably flip Panik and Hagelin tbh, and have a nice scoring third line there with Panik-Eller-Virtanen and have a checking shutdown 4th line in Hags-Dowd-Hathaway. If the 4th line needs more scoring, Sprong can slide in for Hathaway.
